Game 1 – 7:00 ET, AHL Live

The Atlantic Division Finals get underway tonight with Game 1 at Giant Center between Hershey and Providence… The Bears and Bruins both advanced to the second round by winning a decisive Game 5 on the road on Sunday… Providence took out regular-season champion Wilkes-Barre/Scranton with a 2-1 win, while Hershey eliminated Lehigh Valley, the fourth-best team in the league in the regular season, by a 3-2 score… Stanislav Galiev (3-2-5) was the top point-getter in the first round for Hershey, which won all three games in Allentown but lost both on home ice… Bears forward Chris Bourque (2-0-2) was on the other side of the match-up when Hershey last faced Providence in the Calder Cup Playoffs, a 3-2 first-round win by the Bruins in 2013… Pheonix Copley (3-2, 2.16, .933) allowed just 11 goals on 163 shots in the first round vs. Lehigh Valley… Zane McIntyre (3-2, 2.35, .936) was equally impressive for Providence, allowing 12 goals on 187 shots by Wilkes-Barre… McIntyre’s 50 saves in Game 5 were the most by an AHL goalie to win an elimination game in regulation since May 12, 1998, when Dan Cloutier (52 saves) and Hartford beat Worcester, 4-1… Rookie Danton Heinen (4-2-6) led the Bruins in scoring in the first round, including scoring both goals in Game 5… Providence has gotten at least one point from 16 different players already this postseason… The B’s were 6-for-22 (27.3 percent) on the power play in the first round, best in the league; the Bears were 0-for-13.

Syracuse takes a 1-0 series lead into tonight’s Game 2 following a 3-1 victory over Toronto yesterday… Byron Froese‘s first goal against his former team proved to be the game-winner… Froese (2-2-4) was the Marlies’ leading scorer when he was acquired by Tampa Bay from Toronto on Feb. 27… Erik Condra (3-3-6) and Yanni Gourde (1-0-1) also scored last night for the Crunch, and Mike McKenna (4-1, 1.63, .937) made 24 saves, shutting out the Marlies over the final 58:21 of the game after an early goal by Andreas Johnsson (2-0-2)… Kasimir Kaskisuo (2-1, 1.22, .945) stopped 26 of 28 shots for Toronto… Daniel Walcott, in the Crunch lineup for the first time since Mar. 11, recorded an assist in Game 1… Syracuse was 1-for-5 on the power play last night; Toronto was 0-for-4.

The Central Division Finals shift to Van Andel Arena for Game 3 tonight with Grand Rapids and Chicago square at a game apiece… Seven different Wolves scored in last night’s 7-3 win, the first time Chicago had seven goals in a playoff game since a 7-3 win over Rockford on May 3, 2008… Mackenzie MacEachern (1-1-2) and Tage Thompson (1-1-2) both had a goal and an assist last night after going scoreless through the Wolves’ first six playoff games… Vince Dunn (1-3-4) also had a goal and an assist in Game 2 while Petteri Lindbohm (1-3-4), Brett Sterling (1-0-1), Jake Walman (2-1-3) and Andrew Agozzino (2-2-4) also scored and Kenny Agostino (3-5-8) and Ty Loney (1-2-3) added two assists each… Sterling’s goal gives him 18-20-38 in 54 career Calder Cup Playoff games… Ville Husso (4-3, 2.54, .920) made 28 saves for Chicago and improved to 3-0 this postseason following a loss… Kyle Criscuolo (2-1-3), Evgeny Svechnikov (2-3-5) and Matt Lorito (3-1-4) scored for the Griffins, who had a seven-game winning streak snapped… Jared Coreau (4-1, 2.82, .906) stopped 24 of 31 shots… Tyler Bertuzzi (2-5-7) picked up another assist and now has 16-11-27 in 28 career Calder Cup Playoff games… Chicago scored three power-play goals and one shorthanded marker in Game 2.

San Jose hosts San Diego tonight looking to even up the best-of-seven Pacific Division Finals… Kevin Roy scored 38 seconds into overtime to give the Gulls a come-from-behind 3-2 win in Game 1 last night… Roy, scoreless in his first three games this postseason, now has 2-3-5 in his last three… Nate Guenin (1-0-1) scored with 3:56 left in regulation to tie the game for San Diego; it was the first postseason goal of Guenin’s 11-year pro career… Kalle Kossila (2-3-5) also scored for the Gulls, who trailed 1-0 and 2-1… Joakim Ryan (3-1-4) and Ryan Carpenter (5-3-8) scored for the Barracuda… Carpenter leads the AHL in playoff goals and is tied for the lead in points… Jhonas Enroth (4-2, 1.84, .946), who made 36 saves in Game 1, has stopped 73 of 76 shots in his last two outings… Troy Grosenick (3-3, 2.61, .897) allowed at least three goals for the fourth time in six playoff starts… The Gulls’ game-winning goal came on the first shot of overtime by either team after the Barracuda held a 38-15 advantage in regulation… San Diego played Game 1 without leading playoff scorer Nic Kerdiles (3-3-6), who made his Stanley Cup Playoff debut with Anaheim last night… Game 1 marked the first victory by the road team in 11 meetings between the clubs this season… Both teams were 1-for-4 on the power play.

In Stanley Cup Playoff action yesterday, Corey Perry scored 6:57 into the second overtime to give Anaheim a 4-3 win over Edmonton… Perry (1g, 2a), Ryan Getzlaf (1g, 1a) and Rickard Rakell (1g, 1a) also helped the Ducks erase a three-goal deficit in the final 3:16 of regulation… Dmitrij Jaskin and Jaden Schwartz scored as St. Louis staved off elimination with a 2-1 win over Nashville.

In the 2017 IIHF World Championships yesterday, 2016 Eddie Shore Award co-winner Mikko Rantanen assisted on the winning goal and 2016 Calder Cup champion Joonas Korpisalo made 22 saves as Finland beat Belarus, 3-2… Thomas Greiss made 42 saves and Tobias Rieder scored to help Germany to a 2-1 win over the United States… Tyson Barrie had a goal and an assist in Canada’s 4-1 win over the Czech Republic… Andrei Vasilevskiy made 22 saves in Russia’s 2-1 shootout win over Sweden.


On This Date
May 6, 1980 – Darryl Sutter scores 6:01 into overtime, giving New Brunswick a 3-2 win over Maine in Game 6 and sending the Hawks into the Calder Cup Finals.
