One win away from its first-ever trip to the Calder Cup Finals, the Norfolk Admirals look for the sweep in Game 4 at St. John’s tonight… Pierre-Cedric Labrie (4-3-7) blocked a shot at the Norfolk blue line, took off the other way on a breakaway and beat Eddie Pasquale 1:37 into overtime last night to give the Admirals a 1-0 win and a commanding 3-0 series lead… Dustin Tokarski (7-2, 1.83, .931) made 25 saves for his first shutout of the postseason, and has now stopped 84 of 86 IceCaps shots (0.66, .977) in the series… Pasquale (7-7, 2.31, .925) finished with 26 saves on the night but St. John’s lost for the fifth time in its last six games… Norfolk’s Mike Kostka (four) and Alexandre Picard (three) were the only players on either team with more than two shots on goal in Game 3, while the IceCaps’ Travis Ramsey was the only one of 36 skaters not to be credited with at least one shot… Norfolk improved to 3-1 in overtime games during these playoffs; St. John’s fell to 3-2… It was the first 1-0 overtime game in the Calder Cup Playoffs since 2008, and just the fourth in the last 50 years… This is the first time in franchise history that Norfolk has owned a 3-0 lead in a best-of-seven series… The Admirals are 2-0 this postseason and 5-1 all-time with a chance to close out a series… The IceCaps are 1-0 when facing elimination, having defeated Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in Game 7 last round… Two teams in AHL history have come back to win a series after trailing 0-3 (Rochester, 1960 vs. Cleveland; Adirondack, 1989 vs. Hershey).

From Calder to Stanley

Former AHL All-Star Zach Parise recorded two goals and an assist, Bryce Salvador had a goal and an assist and Travis Zajac scored the game-winner as New Jersey evened the NHL’s Eastern Conference Finals at two games apiece with a 4-1 win over the N.Y. Rangers last night… Jacob Josefson made his playoff debut for the Devils, becoming the sixth member of the 2011-12 Albany Devils to appear in a game for New Jersey this postseason (Adam Henrique, Peter Harrold, Stephen Gionta, Steve Bernier, Tim Sestito).

May 22, 2010Boyd Kane’s goal 7:06 into overtime gives Hershey a 3-2 win over Manchester and sends the Bears to the Calder Cup Finals for the fourth time in five years.

May 22, 2009 – After Manitoba scores twice in the final 21 seconds of regulation to tie the game, Houston gets a goal from Tony Hrkac at 4:19 of double overtime to stave off elimination with a 4-3 win in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals.

May 22, 2004Jed Ortmeyer’s third-period goal helps Hartford to a 3-2 win over Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and a 2-1 series lead in the Eastern Conference finals.

May 22, 2003 – Jarret Stoll sets an AHL playoff record with a goal just four seconds into the third period, helping Hamilton to an 8-3 win over Binghamton and a berth in the Calder Cup Finals… Marc Cavosie scores twice as Houston wins the Western Conference title with a 2-1 win in Game 7 at Grand Rapids.

May 22, 2002 – Raffi Torres breaks a scoreless tie with 1:27 left in regulation and Rick DiPietro posts the fifth Game 7 shutout in AHL history as Bridgeport advances to the Calder Cup Finals with a 3-0 win over Hamilton.

May 22, 1998 – Mike Maneluk (3g, 1a) and Jim Montgomery (1g, 4a) lead the Philadelphia Phantoms to a 7-3 win over the Albany River Rats and a 3-1 lead in their conference final series.
