From Calder to Stanley

Ryan Carter scored the game-winning goal with 4:24 to play and Stephen Gionta recorded a goal and an assist as New Jersey took a 3-2 series lead in the NHL’s Eastern Conference Finals with a 5-3 win over the N.Y. Rangers last night… Carter notched 16-20-36 in 76 games as a rookie with the AHL’s Portland Pirates in 2006-07 before helping Anaheim win the Stanley Cup that spring… Gionta, the third-year captain of the AHL’s Albany Devils, tallied 6-10-16 in 56 games for Albany this season but now has 3-3-6 in 17 playoff contests with New Jersey… Brandon Prust, who tallied at last 10 goals and 200 PIM in each of his three AHL seasons with Omaha (2005-07) and Quad City (2007-08), scored his first professional playoff goal for the Rangers.

May 24, 2011 – Houston, which had coughed up leads of 3-0 in the series and of 2-0 and 3-2 scores in Game 7, advances to the Calder Cup Finals when Jon DiSalvatore scores with 1:13 left in regulation for a 4-3 victory over Hamilton.

May 24, 2010Matt Climie makes 51 saves and Aaron Gagnon scores at 18:32 of overtime as Texas staves off elimination with a 3-2 win over Hamilton in Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals.

May 24, 2008Tim Brent’s goal with 30.7 seconds remaining in the third period of Game 7 snaps a tie and sends Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to the Calder Cup Finals with a 3-2 win over Portland.

May 24, 2006Bobby Ryan scores his first professional goal as Portland wins Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals, 5-3 over Hershey.

May 24, 2002Bob Nardella scores with 2.7 seconds left in regulation and Andreas Karlsson follows up 13:58 into overtime as Chicago beats Bridgeport, 5-4, in Game 1 of the Calder Cup Finals.

May 24, 2000 – In the first 1-0 Calder Cup Finals game in 19 years, Chris Wells scores and J.F. Labbe makes 26 saves as Hartford takes Game 1 from Rochester.

May 24, 1998Martin St. Louis picks up a goal and an assist as the Saint John Flames win the Eastern Conference championship with a 7-3 decision over Hartford.

May 24, 1996Dwayne Roloson stops 31 shots to lead Saint John to a 4-1 win at Portland, evening up their conference final series at two games apiece.

May 24, 1991Michel Picard’s goal six minutes into the third period stands up as the game-winner as Springfield defeats Rochester, 5-3, to capture its second straight Calder Cup championship.

May 24, 1985 – The Sherbrooke Canadiens, led by 19-year-old goaltender Patrick Roy, win the Calder Cup with a 3-1 win over the Baltimore Skipjacks.
