St. John’s and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton move their series to northeastern Pennsylvania for three contests, starting with tonight’s Game 3… The teams split a pair of 3-1 decisions on the Rock, with the IceCaps taking Game 1 and the Penguins answering in Game 2… Joey Mormina‘s shorthanded goal early in the third period was his first point in 46 career Calder Cup Playoff games, and stood up as the game-winner… It was the Penguins’ fifth SHG in six games vs. the IceCaps this season… Eric Tangradi (2-1-3) and Jason Williams (2-8-10) also scored in Game 2 for Wilkes-Barre, and Brad Thiessen (4-3, 2.14, .906) stopped 22 of 23 shots… Ben Maxwell scored the only St. John’s goal on a first-period power play… The Penguins were 3-0 at Mohegan Sun Arena during their first-round series vs. Hershey, but lost twice at home to the IceCaps in March… Eddie Pasquale (4-2, 2.32, .932) was 13-5-1 on the road during the regular season, and 1-1 in Manchester during the conference quarterfinals.

In a surprise display of offensive fireworks between two defensively strong teams, San Antonio took the early series lead with a 6-4 victory over Oklahoma City in Game 1 on Thursday night… The Rampage and Barons scored 10 goals in the opener after combining for 26 goals in eight regular-season meetings, including three 1-0 games… San Antonio scored the final four goals of the game after trailing 4-2, with Michael Caruso (1-1-2) breaking the tie with 4:39 left in regulation… Alex Petrovic (2-3-5), Mark Cullen (2-4-6), Bill Thomas (2-3-5), Tyson Strachan (1-0-1) and Jon Matsumoto (4-7-11) also scored for the Rampage, who saw 12 different skaters notch a point in the opener… The six goals matched a season high for the San Antonio offense… Mark Arcobello (2-5-7) and Teemu Hartikainen (2-2-4) had a goal and an assist each for the Barons and Magnus Paajarvi (0-3-3) recorded two assists… Hunter Tremblay (3-1-4) and Josh Green (3-1-4) also scored… Yann Danis (3-2, 2.02, .905) allowed all six goals on 29 shots after giving up four total in four first-round games vs. Houston… Jacob Markstrom (4-0, 2.79, .910) made 26 saves for his seventh straight win dating back to the regular season… Quinton Howden, the 25th overall pick (by Florida) in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, made his pro debut for San Antonio in Game 1.

After trading wins at Ricoh Coliseum, Toronto and Abbotsford head west to the Fraser Valley for Games 3, 4 and 5 of their Western Conference semifinal… The Marlies were 5-1 winners in Game 2 on Thursday night, scoring five unanswered goals after spotting the Heat an early lead… Nazem Kadri (2-3-5) recorded a goal and two assists for the Marlies, and Jerry D’Amigo (6-1-7) scored his league-leading sixth goal of the postseason… Korbinian Holzer (1-1-2) and Ryan Hamilton (1-1-2), both scoreless through Toronto’s first four playoff games, notched a goal and an assist each on Thursday… Matt Frattin (3-2-5) also scored and Jake Gardiner (0-4-4) added two assists, while Ben Scrivens (4-1, 1.82, .938) finished with 37 saves… Jon Rheault (3-0-3) had the only goal for Abbotsford in Game 2… Ben Walter (1-6-7) extended his playoff scoring streak to five games with an assist, but Heat forwards Krys Kolanos (4-5-9), Hugh Jessiman (1-3-4) and Greg Nemisz (2-3-5) were all held off the scoresheet in Game 2 for the first time this postseason as Abbotsford saw its 11-game winning streak come to an end… The Heat have won six in a row on home ice, including wins over Toronto on Apr. 13 and 15.


From Calder to Stanley

Former Springfield Falcon Shane Doan scored the game’s only goal and Mike Smith turned aside 25 shots as Phoenix took a 3-1 series lead with a 1-0 win over Nashville in Game 4 of their Stanley Cup conference semifinal series… Pekka Rinne stopped 23 of 24 shots in the loss for the Predators.


By the Numbers

2-23 – Combined record of AHL teams this postseason when trailing after two periods… San Antonio (Game 1 vs. Chicago) and St. John’s (Game 4 vs. Syracuse) have the only wins.

36.0 – San Antonio’s power-play efficiency (9-for-25) in six playoff games… The Rampage ranked 28th in the 30-team AHL during the regular season at 14.4 percent.

May 5, 2003Ray Emery stops 34 shots as Binghamton advances to the conference finals with a 2-1 win over Bridgeport in Game 6.

May 5, 2000J.P. Dumont scores twice and Mika Noronen makes 32 saves for his AHL-record sixth shutout of the postseason as Rochester moves into the conference finals with a 3-0 win over Hamilton.

May 5, 1993 – Bill McDougall ties an AHL playoff record with five goals (and adds an assist) in Cape Breton’s 8-2 win over St. John’s as the Oilers complete a four-game sweep of the Maple Leafs.

May 5, 1974 – Rick Middleton’s overtime goal allows the Providence Reds to avoid a sweep with a 5-4 win over Hershey in Game 4 of the Calder Cup Finals.
