AHL hockey officially returns to Mile One Centre tonight as the St. John’s IceCaps host the Hamilton Bulldogs… It’s the first meaningful AHL game in St. John’s since Nov. 12, 2008, when Bridgeport and Binghamton met in a neutral-site contest, and the first for a hometown team since the Maple Leafs’ 6-1 playoff win over Manitoba on Apr. 22, 2005… The IceCaps got their inaugural season off to a quick start with a pair of road wins last weekend, defeating Providence (4-1) and Manchester (1-0)… Hamilton has been off since a season-opening 5-2 win over Rochester last Saturday… The Bulldogs were 2-for-4 on the power play in their only game of the season; the IceCaps are 9-for-9 on the penalty kill for the year.

Bridgeport and Adirondack open a six-game season series with their first meeting since Jan. 13, 2010… The Phantoms have won four straight from the Sound Tigers since moving to Glens Falls in 2009-10… Adirondack got goals from six different skaters in a 6-3 win over Connecticut last Saturday… Denis Hamel led the offense with three points (1-2-3) and tied Bruce Boudreau for 15th place all-time with his 316th career AHL goal… After losing its opener to Portland, the Sound Tigers got a hat trick from Justin DiBenedetto in a 4-2 win at Albany on Sunday… Anders Nilsson, a third-round draft pick by the N.Y. Islanders in 2009, made 28 stops for his first AHL win.

Connecticut closes out a season-opening three-game road stretch at the Times Union Center in Albany tonight, where the Devils wrap up a three-game homestand… Albany won both meetings between the teams last season… Ten different Devils have recorded a point on the young season, but only Chad Wiseman (1-1-2) has more than one… Kris Newbury has scored all three of the Whale’s non-shootout goals this season, all in a 6-3 loss to Adirondack last Saturday… Chad Johnson made 41 saves in Sunday’s 1-0 Connecticut shootout win over Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

For the 16th consecutive season, a sellout crowd at Van Andel Arena will be on hand for the Grand Rapids Griffins’ home opener, this time with Toronto as the opponent… The Griffins’ 3-2 loss in Rockford last Saturday ended their eight-year points streak in season openers (5-0-2-1)… Willie Coetzee and Jamie Johnson scored power-play goals for Grand Rapids in the defeat, and 2009 second-round draft pick Landon Ferraro picked up his professional point with an assist… The Marlies opened 2011-12 with a 3-2 win in Binghamton last Saturday behind goals from Darryl Boyce, Joe Colborne and Joey Crabb… Toronto and Grand Rapids split six meetings last year, with both teams going 3-2-0-1.

The last team to hit the ice this season, Syracuse kicks off its 2011-12 schedule with a visit to Binghamton… Kyle Palmieri is back in the Crunch lineup after tying for the AHL rookie lead in goals (29) last season… Rookie forward Peter Holland, Anaheim’s first-round pick (15th overall) in the 2009 draft, recorded 3-3-6 in three games as he made his pro debut at the end of last season for Syracuse… The Senators, off to an 0-2-0-0 start after falling to Hershey and Toronto last weekend, won six of eight from the Crunch last year, outscoring Syracuse by a 40-19 margin… Binghamton’s Corey Locke led all scorers with 2-12-14 in the season series.

Atlantic Division foes Manchester and Providence square off at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center tonight… The Monarchs were playoff-bound while the Bruins missed the postseason last year, but it was Providence which won eight of the 10 meetings between the clubs in 2010-11, including all five in Rhode Island… The B’s opened their 20th-anniversary season with 4-1 home losses to St. John’s and Worcester last weekend… Manchester defeated Springfield on opening night last Friday but was shut out, 1-0, by St. John’s on Saturday… Monarchs goalie Martin Jones has stopped 47 of 50 shots (1.52, .940) to begin his second pro season.

Following last night’s 5-1 win in Rochester, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton returns home to battle Springfield tonight… Eric Tangradi and Bryan Lerg had a goal and an assist each for the Penguins and Brad Thiessen made 29 saves yesterday… Newcomers Nick Drazenovic (1-3-4) and Cody Bass (2-1-3) lead the Falcons in scoring through two games… Cam Atkinson, an All-American at Boston College last season, was assigned to Springfield by the parent Columbus Blue Jackets yesterday… The Falcons have not won at Mohegan Sun Arena since a 4-3 overtime decision on Nov. 4, 2005, a game that saw current Penguins captain Ryan Craig pick up an assist for Springfield.

After dropping a 5-1 decision to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in its home opener last night, Rochester is back on the road for a visit to Lake Erie this evening as both teams look for their first win of the season… The Monsters allowed only three goals in two games to Abbotsford last weekend, but scored just once themselves… Trevor Cann stopped 57 of 60 shots (1.54, .950) in two starts for Lake Erie… The Amerks have been outscored 10-3 in losses to the Penguins and Hamilton… Marcus Foligno scored his first professional goal with 3:33 remaining in regulation to break up Wilkes-Barre’s shutout bid last night… Lake Erie was 7-1-0-0 against Rochester (1-4-2-1) last season.

Hershey and Norfolk begin a home-and-home set at Scope Arena tonight… The Admirals are coming off a two-game sweep of Charlotte last weekend… Fifteen of Norfolk’s 18 skaters had at least one point on the weekend, with the rookie trio of Cory Conacher (1-3-4), Tyler Johnson (2-1-3) and Reebok/AHL Player of the Week Carter Ashton (3-1-4) leading the way… The Bears, 6-1-0-1 against the Admirals last season, are off to a 2-0-0-0 start after back-to-back 3-2 wins in Binghamton and Wilkes-Barre last weekend… Chris Bourque (1-1-2) has taken 15 of Hershey’s 60 shots on goal through two games.

Chicago and Milwaukee will take turns playing the guest at the other’s home opener this weekend, beginning tonight at the Bradley Center with the 105th regular-season meeting between the teams since they both joined the AHL in 2001… The Wolves opened the season with road losses to San Antonio (3-2, SO) and Houston (4-1), while the Admirals were 4-1 winners in Peoria… Eddie Lack, last year’s AHL All-Rookie goaltender, stopped 31 of 33 shots in his first start for Chicago… Milwaukee had nine rookies in the lineup last Saturday, and a 10th player — forward Juuso Puustinen — was making his North American debut.

After splitting 10 meeting last season, Oklahoma City and San Antonio begin their 2011-12 season series at the AT&T Center tonight… The Rampage opened their schedule with a 3-2 shootout win over Chicago last Saturday, while the Barons dropped a 7-0 decision at Texas on Sunday… Bracken Kearns scored for San Antonio, and Jonathan Hazen picked up a goal in his professional debut… Making his AHL debut, Brian Foster picked up the win in relief of Manny Legace, stopping 21 of 22 shots in the second and third periods and overtime and denying all four attempts in the shootout… Barons goalie David LeNeveu played 86 games for San Antonio from 2005-08.

Houston and Texas meet at Cedar Park Center tonight, both 1-0-0-0 on the young season… The Aeros (9-3-0-0) won nine of 12 meetings with the Stars (3-6-2-1) last year, with Jon DiSalvatore racking up 8-7-15 in the season series… The Aeros were 4-1 winners over Chicago on Sunday, with Casey Wellman scoring twice and Jeff Taffe and Kris Foucault adding two assists each… Matt Hackett made 24 saves in the victory… Rookie Matt Fraser tallied two goals and an assist in Texas’s 7-0 win over Oklahoma City on Sunday… The Stars scored four power-play goals in the game, and Richard Bachman stopped 21 shots for the shutout.

Abbotsford welcomes Rockford to town for a pair of weekend games, beginning with tonight’s home opener… The Heat swept a pair in Cleveland last weekend, defeating Lake Erie 2-1 and 1-0… Leland Irving, 30-24-2 with eight shutouts a year ago, stopped 41 of 42 shots combined (0.50, .976)… Irving won five 1-0 decisions last season as well… The IceHogs, who finished last season with 10 wins in their last 11 games, opened 2011-12 with a pair of victories last weekend, defeating Grand Rapids (3-2) and Peoria (5-3)… Rob Klinkhammer (2-3-5), Brandon Segal (3-0-3), Kyle Beach (2-1-3) and Brian Connelly (0-3-3) lead the Rockford offense to date.
