AHL Quick Hits: East heavyweights duke it out

In Wednesday’s AHL action, Janne Pesonen tallied a goal and four assists and Mark Letestu added four points (1-3-4) as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton dropped Philadelphia, 8-5… Gilbert Brule scored in regulation and the shootout and Devan Dubnyk (32 saves) snapped a personal 15-game losing streak as Springfield edged Hershey, 3-2… Pat Dwyer scored two of Albany’s five third-period goals in a 5-3 win over Norfolk… Patric Hornqvist extended his goal-scoring streak to eight games as Milwaukee beat Rockford, 3-2.

LOOKING AHEAD:

Manitoba takes its five-game winning streak into Copps Coliseum on Friday for the first of a two-game set with Hamilton… The North Division rivals, who have met just once since a two-game set opening weekend, clash five times in the season’s final month… Jason Krog is tied for fifth in the league with 66 points (22-44-66) in 59 games for the Moose and shows six points (3-3-6) in three games against Hamilton this season… Michael Grabner has three goals in his last two games for Manitoba… Cory Schneider leads the league with a 1.70 GAA and has as many shutouts (5) as he does losses (23-5-1)… Sergei Kostitsyn (2-2-4) and Ryan Russell (3-1-4) are on four-game scoring streaks for the Bulldogs… Hamilton’s David Desharnais (18-26-44) and Ben Maxwell (17-27-44) are tied for fifth in the AHL rookie scoring race… The visitor has won nine of the last 11 meetings between the Moose and Bulldogs.

Just one point out of a playoff spot in the West Division, Peoria visits Grand Rapids for a two-game set this weekend… The Rivermen are on a season-high four-game winning streak… Carl Corazzini has a point in five straight games (1-4-5) for Peoria, and defenseman Justin Fletcher is on a four-game run (2-3-5)… Rearguard Ivan Vishnevskiy has scored in three straight tilts (3-1-4), and 2009 AHL All-Star Jonas Junland has netted three of his 10 goals this season against the Griffins… Peoria paces the league with 15 shorthanded goals on the season… Grand Rapids captain Darren Haydar has climbed to fourth in the AHL with 67 points (26-41-67) on the strength of a nine-game scoring run (6-11-17)… Evan McGrath shows seven points (3-4-7) in his last six games for Grand Rapids… The Griffins are tied for the AHL’s best penalty kill (86.8 percent) and have its second-best power play (21.1 percent).

Bridgeport, 12-1-0-3 in its last 16 games and alone atop the East Division, hits the road this weekend for games in Springfield and Hartford before heading south for a first-place showdown against Hershey on Sunday… 2005 Calder Cup champion Jon Sim has scored in all four games (5-1-6) since joining the Sound Tigers, and Jeremy Colliton has a point in four straight (3-4-7)… Bridgeport is 13-6-2-2 against the Atlantic Division this season and shows the AHL’s third-ranked penalty kill on the road (86.8 percent)… The Sound Tigers could face four of the league’s top five scorers this weekend – the Wolf Pack’s Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau (26-43-69) and Artem Anisimov (27-39-66) on Saturday, and the Bears’ Keith Aucoin (22-64-86) and Alexandre Giroux (46-30-76) on Sunday.

On Thursday, two-time AHL All-Star Mike Iggulden tallied his first career NHL goal to help the N.Y. Islanders past Montreal, 3-2… Recalled from Rochester earlier in the day, rookie Michal Repik netted Florida’s lone goal in a 3-1 loss at Buffalo… Jamie Lundmark, who has 52 points in 54 AHL games with Quad City this season, scored twice and added an assist in Calgary’s 6-5 shootout win at Detroit.
