Bourque named AHL’s top rookie for January

The American Hockey League announced today that Norfolk Admirals left wing Rene Bourque has been named the Reebok AHL Rookie of the Month for January. In 10 games, Bourque tallied seven goals and five assists for 12 points along with a plus-8 rating for the Admirals, who went 8-1-0-1.

Bourque tallied a point in nine of his 10 games during January, beginning the month with a seven-game scoring streak. He scored a goal in a 4-3 win over Bridgeport on Jan. 8, and potted the game-winning tally in a 3-1 victory over Hershey on Jan. 21. Bourque’s biggest night of the month came on Jan. 28, when he recorded his first professional hat trick in a 4-2 win over Springfield.

In recognition of his achievement, Bourque will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming Admirals home game.

Bourque signed as a free agent with the Chicago Blackhawks on July 29, 2004. Among AHL rookies, he is currently tied for first 19 goals and second with 34 points in 45 games with Norfolk this season. A native of Lac La Biche, Alta., the 23-year-old Bourque played four seasons at the University of Wisconsin (2000-04), leading the Badgers in scoring in his junior and senior seasons.

Umberger, Portland right wing Jakub Klepis, Rochester left wing Daniel Paille, Springfield center Nick Tarnasky, Syracuse left wing Greg Mauldin and Utah left wing Randall Gelech.
