Canadiens sign Woywitka

Montreal Canadiens and Hamilton Bulldogs general manager Pierre Gauthier announced today the signing of defenseman Jeff Woywitka to a one-year, two-way contract for the 2011-12 season.

In 2010-11, Woywitka recorded 11 points (two goals, nine assists) in 63 games with the Dallas Stars. He maintained a plus/minus rating of plus-5, the team’s fifth best.

Woywitka, 27, has played 251 career regular-season games in the NHL with St. Louis and Dallas, registering 49 points (eight goals, 41 assists) and 141 penalty minutes.

The 6-foot-3, 227-pound defenseman has also appeared in 315 career regular-season games in the American Hockey League, registering 124 points (21 goals, 103 assists) and 291 penalty minutes with Philadelphia, Toronto/Edmonton and Peoria.

A native of Vermilion, Alta., Woywitka was drafted in the first round, 27th overall, by the Philadelphia Flyers in 2001.
