‘Canes nab Sanguinetti, Matsumoto

The Carolina Hurricanes, parent club of the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers, today announced the acquisitions of defenseman Bobby Sanguinetti and forward Jon Matsumoto in separate transactions.

Carolina acquired Sanguinetti from the New York Rangers, parent club of the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, in exchange for Carolina’s 2010 sixth-round pick (157th overall) and Washington’s 2011 second-round pick.

The Hurricanes netted Matsumoto from the Philadelphia Flyers, parent club of the AHL’s Adirondack Phantoms, in exchange for Washington’s seventh-round pick, 206th overall in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

Sanguinetti, 22, completed his second full professional season in 2009-10, splitting the season between the Rangers and the Wolf Pack. Along with making his NHL debut, the Trenton, NJ, native scored nine goals, and earned 29 assists (38 points), in 61 AHL regular-season games last season. 

Sanguinetti (6’3”, 190 lbs.) has scored 15 goals and earned 69 assists (84 points) in 150 career AHL regular-season games with the Wolf Pack, and he participated in the 2009 and 2010 AHL All-Star Classics.

The Rangers drafted Sanguinetti in the first round, 21st overall, in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

Matsumoto, 23, completed his third full season of professional hockey in 2009-10, leading the AHL’s Adirondack Phantoms with 30 goals and 62 points while playing in all 80 of the team’s regular-season games.

The Ottawa, Ont., native has amassed 81 goals and 92 assists (173 points) in 251 AHL regular-season games with the Flyers’ affiliates and played in the 2010 AHL All-Star Classic.

The Flyers drafted Matsumoto in the third round, 79th overall, in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.
