Canucks, Oilers make trade

The Vancouver Canucks, parent club of the AHL’s Utica Comets, on Thursday acquired center Will Acton from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for left wing Kellan Lain.

Acton, 27, has split the 2014-15 season to date between the Oilers and AHL’s Oklahoma City Barons. He has played in three games with Edmonton, and collected one goal and one assist in six games with Oklahoma City this year.

The Edina, Minn., native has appeared in 33 career NHL games, recording three goals and two assists. He has also skated in 194 career AHL contests, totaling 28 goals and 32 assists for 60 points. Acton reached the Calder Cup Finals with Toronto in 2012.

Lain, 25, has appeared in 10 games with Utica this season, recording one assist. As a rookie in 2013-14, Lain recorded seven goals and 12 assists for 19 points in 63 games with the Comets, and also made his NHL debut with Vancouver, tallying one goal in nine contests.

Utica also acquired forward Mitch Holmberg from Oklahoma City. Holmberg, a 21-year-old rookie, has not appeared in the AHL this season. He recorded 62 goals and 118 points in 72 games for Spokane last season, leading the Western Hockey League in scoring.
