Spencer Carbery has been named the 26th head coach in Hershey Bears franchise history, the Bears and Washington Capitals announced today.

Carbery, 36, brings experience coaching both at the junior and professional levels to Hershey. He most recently spent the 2017-18 season as an assistant coach with the American Hockey League’s Providence Bruins, helping the club to an impressive 45-26-3-2 record.

He served as head coach of the Ontario Hockey League’s Saginaw Spirit in 2016-17, and began his coaching career with six seasons in South Carolina, Hershey’s ECHL affiliate. He was head coach and director of hockey operations for the Stingrays from 2011-16, compiling a record of 207-115-38, reaching the league finals in 2015 and winning the ECHL’s coach of the year award in 2013-14.

Carbery’s ties to Hershey and Washington also include coaching multiple players who advanced in the organization, including 2018 Stanley Cup champions Philipp Grubauer and Nathan Walker.

Carbery becomes the second-youngest current AHL head coach, behind only Rockford’s Jeremy Colliton.
