Checkers acquire Calder Cup winner Jurco

The Charlotte Checkers have acquired forward Tomas Jurco from the Springfield Thunderbirds in exchange for future considerations.

In a related deal, the Carolina Hurricanes have dealt forward Cliff Pu to the Florida Panthers.

Jurco, 26, signed an AHL contract with Springfield on Jan. 3 and has notched four goals and six assists for 10 points in 14 games with the Thunderbirds this season.

A native of Kosice, Slovakia, Jurco has appeared in 163 AHL contests with Springfield, Rockford and Grand Rapids, totaling 50 goals and 56 assists for 106 points. He won a Calder Cup championship with the Griffins in 2013.

Originally a second-round selection of the Detroit Red Wings (35th overall) in 2011, Jurco has skated in 201 NHL games with Detroit and Chicago, totaling 22 goals and 28 assists for 50 points. He also represented Slovakia at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Pu, 20, has skated in 44 AHL games with Charlotte this season, recording one goal and five assists.

A rookie from Richmond Hill, Ont., Pu was a third-round choice by Buffalo in the 2016 NHL Draft.
