Charlotte exploded for an AHL season-high eight goals in the second period, turning a 1-1 contest into a 9-1 rout, and rolled to a 10-3 win over visiting Syracuse on Monday at Time Warner Cable Arena. Nine different players scored at least one goal as the Checkers moved to 12-3-0-2 in their last 17 games.
During the second-period offensive eruption, Charlotte scored two goals in a span of 21 seconds, three in 1:07, four in 1:41, five in 2:41, six in 3:39, seven in 7:15, and eight in a span of 13:44.
Rookie forward Riley Nash was the only member of the Checkers with two goals on the night, and Oskar Osala recorded a team-high four points (1-3-4), all in the second frame.
Jerome Samson notched his team-leading 14th goal of the season for Charlotte; Zach Boychuk and rookie Zac Dalpe each reached the 10-goal plateau for the year; Brad Herauf and Brett Sutter each scored his first AHL goal of 2010-11; and the Checkers also received markers from Jacob Micflikier and former AHL All-Star Jon Matsumoto.
Chris Terry (0-3-3), Nick Dodge (0-2-2), and defenseman Michal Jordan (0-2-2) all chipped in multiple assists, and 15 of Charlotte’s 18 skaters recorded at least one point. Casey Borer, Drayson Bowman, and Bryan Rodney were the lone exceptions.
Charlotte became the second AHL team in the last 10 days to score 10 goals in a game, following Grand Rapids’ 10-8 win at Chicago on Nov. 27.
Checkers goaltender Mike Murphy turned aside 32 of 35 shots in the winning effort.
Kyle Palmieri, Jake Newton, and Stefan Chaput potted goals for the Crunch, who surrendered 10 goals in a game for the first time since a 10-0 loss at Hamilton back on Nov. 2, 2001.
