Checkers cap late surge, head to playoffs

Despite coughing up a two-goal lead in the third period, the Charlotte Checkers did enough to earn a point and become the 16th and final team to earn a spot in the 2017 Calder Cup Playoffs on Saturday night.

The Checkers’ 4-3 overtime loss at Chicago allowed them to edge past Cleveland and lock up fourth place in the Central Division.

Charlotte, 13-2-3-1 since Mar. 9, will face the Wolves in the opening round of the playoffs. Chicago’s rally on Saturday — scoring twice in the final 6:32 of regulation before prevailing in OT — allowed them to claim the Central Division title.

It will be the Checkers’ first trip to the playoffs since 2013.
