Coyotes acquire P. Samuelsson

The Arizona Coyotes, parent club of the AHL’s Portland Pirates, have acquired defenseman Philip Samuelsson from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for forward Rob Klinkhammer and a conditional fifth-round choice in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.

The 23-year-old Samuelsson has registered four assists and 20 penalty minutes in 22 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (AHL) this season. The fourth-year pro set career highs in 2013-14 in goals (3), assists (19), points (22) and plus/minus (+17) for Wilkes-Barre, and has totaled six goals and 39 assists for 45 points in 197 career AHL games.

The 6-foot-2, 194-pound native of Leksand, Sweden, has appeared in five career NHL games with the Penguins. Samuelsson was originally drafted by Pittsburgh in the second round (61st overall) in the 2009 Entry Draft.

Samuelsson has been assigned to Portland, where he joins his younger brother Henrik.
