Crunch paste Senators, 9-1

Geoff Platt registered two goals and two assists and Syracuse’s special teams accounted for seven goals as the Crunch cruised to a 9-1 win over Binghamton in the teams’ preseason opener at the Broome County Arena on Sunday evening.

Tim Jackman also scored twice and Raffaele Sannitz, Jeff Szwez and Brian Gornick added a goal and an assist each for Syracuse, which scored three times in each period.

The Crunch were 5-for-11 on the power play, killed off 12 of 13 Binghamton advantages and scored two shorthanded goals, 35 seconds apart in the first period to break a 1-1 tie.

Andrew Penner and Kevin Couture combined to stop 26 Senators shots on the night. Jason Glass allowed all nine Crunch goals on 46 shots.

The game was also the first contest in this year’s I-81 Puck Cup tournament, a pre-season round-robin challenge among Syracuse, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Binghamton. The Senators won the inaugural event in 2004.
