Dallas acquires Sharp, Johns

Dallas Stars General Manager Jim Nill announced today that the club has acquired forward Patrick Sharp and defenseman Stephen Johns from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for defenseman Trevor Daley and forward Ryan Garbutt.

Sharp, 33, posted 43 points (16-27=43) in 68 regular-season games for Chicago in 2014-15. He led the Blackhawks on the season with eight power play goals and his 230 shots on net finished second on the team. In the postseason, he finished fifth on the team with 15 points (5-10=15) in 23 games, helping Chicago capture the 2015 Stanley Cup.

Playing in parts of 12 NHL seasons with Philadelphia and Chicago, he has appeared in 745 career regular-season games posting 526 career points (249-277=526). Sharp has also appeared in 129 career postseason games, while winning three Stanley Cups with Chicago (2010, 2013, 2015), registering 81 points (43-38=81). He was selected as the MVP of the 2011 NHL All-Star Game.

Sharp spent three seasons playing for the Philadelphia Phantoms. In 163 career AHL regular-season contests, he posted 114 points (52-62=114). He won the Calder Cup with Philadelphia in 2004-05, appearing in 21 games and recording 21 points (8-13=21).

Internationally, Sharp has represented Canada three times, once in the Olympics and twice at the IIHF World Championships. He won a gold medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

"Patrick’s track record speaks for itself having won three Stanley Cups, a Calder Cup and an Olympic gold medal," Nill said. "He will provide leadership for our group and we love his shoot first mentality."

The 6-foot-1, 198-pound native of Winnipeg, Manitoba was originally selected by Philadelphia in the third round (95th overall) of the 2001 NHL Draft.

Johns, 23, concluded his rookie season with the Rockford IceHogs with 21 points (4-17=21) in 51 games played. His +30 plus/minus rating led the team and was tied for first overall in the League. In eight postseason contests, he led the team with his seven points (3-4=7).

Prior to turning professional, Johns spent four seasons at Notre Dame (CCHA/Hockey East). He appeared in 164 games, recording 57 points (15-42=57) and 300 penalty minutes. Internationally, Johns represented the United States at the 2012 World Junior Championship.

"Stephen adds to the corps of young defensemen that we have coming up in our system," said Nill. "He brings an element of size and physicality to our mix and we look forward to him coming in and competing."

The 6-foot-3, 229-pound native of Ellwood City, Pennsylvania was originally selected by Chicago in the second round (60th overall) of the 2010 NHL Draft.

Daley, 31, spent all 11 of his NHL seasons with the Stars. His 756 career regular-season games are the second-most by a defenseman wearing a Dallas Stars sweater and his 231 points (67-164=231) are fourth-most by a blueliner since the team moved to Dallas. He posted 48 points in 118 games with the Utah Grizzlies and the Hamilton Bulldogs (2003-05).

The 5-foot-11, 195-pound native of Toronto, Ontario was originally selected by Dallas in the second round (43rd overall) of the 2002 NHL Draft.

Garbutt, 29, recorded 70 points (30-40=70) in 198 career games for Dallas in parts of four seasons. The 6-foot, 190-pound native of Winnipeg, Manitoba was originally signed by Dallas as an undrafted free agent on July 1, 2011. In 115 AHL games with the Chicago Wolves and Texas Stars, Garbutt recorded 70 points (2010-12).

"We want to thank both Trevor and Ryan for their contributions to the Dallas Stars," said Nill. "Trevor has been an important piece of the Stars organization for many years and we could not be more grateful to him. The strong leadership he displayed both in the locker room and in the North Texas community has created a lasting impact on everyone around him. We wish them both the best."
