The Anaheim Ducks, parent club of the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch, have signed center Trevor Smith to a one-year contract through the 2010-11 NHL season. Per club policy, no financial terms of the deal were disclosed.
Smith, 25, appeared in a career-high 77 games last year with Bridgeport, the New York Islanders’ primary development affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL). Smith scored 21 goals and 26 assists for 47 points with a plus-5 rating and 73 penalty minutes (PIM) with the Sound Tigers last year, ranking second on the team in goals, third in scoring and tied for third in assists. He also added 1-2=3 points and two PIM in five Calder Cup Playoff games.
Originally signed by the New York Islanders as a free agent on Apr. 7, 2007, Smith made his NHL debut in a 4-2 win on Dec. 31, 2008 vs. Florida, going scoreless in 10:55 time-on-ice (TOI). He appeared in seven games for the Islanders in 2008-09, earning his first career NHL goal against Mikka Kiprusoff in a 5-2 loss on Jan. 8, 2009 at Calgary.
A native of North Vancouver, B.C., Smith has played three AHL seasons with Bridgeport, recording 72 goals and 77 assists in 214 games. In 2008-09, he set career highs in goals (30), assists (32) and points (62) while also leading the Sound Tigers in goal scoring and finishing second in points.
