The Springfield Falcons, American Hockey League affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets, have named Toby Petersen an assistant coach.
Petersen, 35, recently retired as a player after a 14-year career that culminated in a Calder Cup championship with the Texas Stars last month.
Petersen played 550 games in the AHL with Texas, the Iowa Stars, the Edmonton Road Runners and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, totaling 149 goals and 226 assists for 374 points. He competed in the AHL All-Star Classic in 2001 and 2008, and was a member of the league’s All-Rookie Team in 2000-01.
Petersen also appeared in 71 career Calder Cup Playoff games, reaching the Finals in 2001 and 2004 in addition to winning the championship in 2014.
In addition, Petersen skated in 398 games in the National Hockey League with Dallas, Edmonton and Pittsburgh, registering 33 goals and 48 assists for 81 points.
A native of Minneapolis, Minn., Petersen represented the United States at the 2007 IIHF World Championships, and was a member of Team USA at the World Junior Championships in 1997 (silver) and 1998.
Petersen played four seasons at Colorado College (1996-2000) and was drafted by Pittsburgh in 1998.
