Fast start lifts Marlies to matinee win over Amerks

David Ling was one of four Toronto skaters to post a goal and an assist, and rookie Jiri Tlusty had a goal and two helpers for his third straight multiple point game as the Marlies posted a 6-2 win over visiting Rochester on Saturday afternoon before 7,140 fans at Ricoh Coliseum. Toronto totaled four first-period goals on its way to the victory.

Ling, Alex Foster, Kris Newbury, and John Mitchell all scored in the first 12:55 of the game for the Marlies.

The teams then exchanged goals over the final 40 minutes. Jay Harrison and Tlusty lit the lamp for the Marlies, and Rochester received its goals from Dan Collins and Brady Calla, who netted the marker of his professional career.

Newbury, Ling, Harrison, and Mitchell finished with a goal and a helper for Toronto. Marlies goaltender Justin Pogge picked up the victory with 24 saves in 26 shots, improving the second-year pro’s season record to 26-10-4.

Toronto captured its 50th victory of the campaign (50-20-3-6) and moved two points up on Chicago for the overall Western Conference lead, pending the outcome of the Wolves’ tilt tonight against Rockford.
