Getzlaf, Perry & Co. pace Pirates past Albany

The dynamic duo of Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry combined for 11 points, Getzlaf tying an AHL season high with six, as Portland defeated Albany, 9-5, at the Cumberland County Civic Center on Saturday night.

Perry scored two goals and assisted on each of Getzlaf’s three. Getzlaf capped his big night — and his hat trick — with two seconds left in the game.

Both first-round picks by Anaheim in the 2003 draft, Getzlaf and Perry were assigned to Portland together on Nov. 22. Since then, Getzlaf has picked up 23 points in 10 games (6g, 17a), while Perry has added 22 points in 11 games (9g, 13a), hitting the scoresheet in each of those 11 contests.

Pierre Parenteau put the Pirates up for good just 97 seconds into Saturday’s match, and Portland built up a 4-0 lead by the first intermission.

All nine goals were hung on Albany goaltender Frank Doyle. With Ari Ahonen out ill, River Rats assistant coach Chris Terreri dressed as Doyle’s back-up for the second straight night.

Dustin Penner recorded three assists, defenseman Shane O’Brien recorded a goal and two assists and Aaron Gavey added a goal and an assist for the Pirates, who won their third straight.

Ahren Nittel picked up two goals and two assists to lead Albany, which dropped its fifth in a row.

The teams meet again Sunday afternoon.
