Hurricanes pick up Osala

The Carolina Hurricanes, parent club of the AHL’s Albany River Rats, have acquired forward Oskar Osala, defenseman Brian Pothier and a 2011 second-round draft pick from the Washington Capitals in exchange for defenseman Joe Corvo.

Osala, 22, has 15 goals and 14 assists in 53 games for the AHL-leading Hershey Bears this season. Last year, the native of Vaasa, Finland, had 23 goals and 14 assists in 75 regular-season games and six goals and four assists in 22 playoff contests to help the Bears win the Calder Cup.

Osala has also appeared in two NHL games with Washington, both during the 2008-09 season.

Pothier, an AHL All-Star Classic participant and a Second Team AHL All-Star in both 2003 and 2005, has played 342 NHL games with Washington, Ottawa and Atlanta.

Corvo was also an AHL All-Star in 2003, and has played 468 games in the NHL with Carolina, Ottawa and Los Angeles. He reached the Calder Cup Finals with Chicago in 2005. He played for Capitals head coach Bruce Boudreau in Lowell and Manchester.
