Hurricanes re-sign Checkers captain

The Carolina Hurricanes, parent club of the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers, today announced that the team has re-signed forward Brett Sutter to a one-year contract.

The deal will pay Sutter $550,000 on the NHL level or $105,000 on the American Hockey League (AHL) level, with a guarantee of at least $150,000.

Sutter, 25, completed his fifth professional season in 2011-12, spending the majority of the year with the Checkers. The Viking, Alta., native notched three assists in 15 NHL games with the Hurricanes, and averaged 7:34 in ice time per game.

On the AHL level, he totaled 13 goals, 16 assists (29 points) and 58 penalty minutes in 63 games, and served as team captain for the Checkers.

Calgary’s sixth-round choice in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, Sutter has earned five points (1g, 4a) and totaled 23 penalty minutes in 34 career NHL games with Calgary and Carolina. He has tallied 45 goals, 64 assists (109 points) and 324 penalty minutes in 335 career AHL games with Quad City, Abbotsford and Charlotte.
