Islanders recall Nilsson

The New York Islanders announced today that goaltender Anders Nilsson has been recalled from the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League.

Nilsson’s first NHL call-up comes after goaltender Evgeni Nabokov was placed on injured reserve with a groin injury suffered on Nov. 17 against the Montreal Canadiens. Goalie Al Montoya remains day-to-day with a strained hamstring.

Nilsson, 21, leads all Sound Tigers goalies with five wins and a 2.86 goals-against average this season. The rookie from Lulea, Sweden, has posted a .908 save percentage in seven appearances.

The Islanders selected Nilsson in the third round, 62nd overall, of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. The 6-foot-6, 220-pound netminder posted a 1.92 GAA with a .918 sv% last year during his second professional season with Lulea of the Swedish Elite League.

On the international stage, Nilsson represented Sweden at the 2011 World Championships. He also won the Bronze Medal at the 2010 World Junior Championships.
