Lightning acquire Ashton, Broll

The Tampa Bay Lightning, parent club of the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch, have acquired right wing Carter Ashton and left wing David Broll from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.

Ashton has played 12 games with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies this season, notching four goals and four assists for eight points. He has also skated in seven NHL games with the Maple Leafs in 2014-15.

Ashton, 23, has totaled 53 goals and 36 assists for 89 points in 163 career AHL contests with Norfolk and Toronto, along with eight goals and nine assists in 29 Calder Cup Playoff games. Ashton also has three assists in 54 career NHL games, all with Toronto.

Ashton was drafted by the Lightning in the first round, 29th overall, of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

Broll is scoreless in 21 AHL games with Toronto this season, and has added two goals and seven assists in 16 outings with Orlando (ECHL).

The 22-year-old Broll has registered three goals and 13 assists for 16 points in 94 career AHL games with Toronto. He made his NHL debut with the Maple Leafs last season, notching one assist in five games.

Broll was originally a sixth-round draft pick by Toronto in 2011.
