Lightning sign Smith to one-year deal

The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed free agent forward Gemel Smith to a one-year, two-way contract.

Smith, 25, appeared in 47 AHL games with the Providence Bruins last season, collecting 16 goals and 24 assists for a career-best 40 points. He also appeared in 17 NHL games between Boston and Dallas, recording two goals and one assist.

A Toronto native, Smith has skated in 233 AHL games with Providence and Texas over five professional seasons, totaling 51 goals and 75 assists for 126 points.

Smith was a fourth-round choice by Dallas in the 2012 NHL Draft and has tallied 11 goals and nine assists for 20 points in 80 career NHL contests with the Stars and Bruins.
