Marlies edge Milwaukee in shotoout, 3-2

TORONTO 3, MILWAUKEE 2 (SO)

Toronto kicked off a nine-game road swing by posting a 3-2 shootout win over Milwaukee on Thursday at the Bradley Center.

Bates Battaglia posted a goal and an assist in regulation and went on to score the winning shootout goal for the Marlies, who captured their third straight win and moved to 6-1-0-0 in their last seven contests.

After a scoreless first period, Milwaukee took a 1-0 lead when Andreas Thuresson scored his seventh goal of the season at 5:05 of the middle frame.

But the Marlies received goals from Jiri Tlusty (9:54) and Battaglia (18:07) head into the second intermission with a 2-1 advantage.

Toronto seemed poised for a regulation win before the Admirals’ Nick Spaling tied it at 19:05 of the third period, sending the contest to overtime.

Tim Stapleton scored in the first shootout round for the Marlies, and Battaglia’s winner came in round three. Toronto goaltender Justin Pogge stopped four of Milwaukee’s five tries after making 22 saves through regulation and overtime.

The overtime loss extended Milwaukee’s points streak to nine games (7-0-2-0) since a 2-0 loss at Grand Rapids on Dec. 20, but the Admirals’ 10-game home winning streak came to an end.
