Michigan native Porter joins Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings, parent club of the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins, have signed unrestricted free agent and Detroit area native Kevin Porter to a one-year, two-way contract.

The 2008 Hobey Baker Award winner as the best U.S. college player, the former University of Michigan standout split the past two seasons between the Buffalo Sabres and their AHL affiliate in Rochester.

Porter has played in 196 AHL games with San Antonio, Lake Erie and Rochester over his six professional seasons, compiling 63 goals and 93 assists for 156 points. The 2013 AHL All-Star registered 19 goals and 17 assists in 50 games with Rochester in 2013-14, and added one assist in 12 games with Buffalo.

In 206 games with Phoenix, Colorado and Buffalo, Porter has produced 29 goals and 26 assists for 55 points. He was a fourth-round draft pick by the Coyotes in 2004.
