Miele heads to Detroit

The Detroit Red Wings, parent club of the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins, have signed forward Andy Miele to a one-year contract.

A native of Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich., Miele tied for third in the AHL with 72 points (27 goals, 45 assists) in 70 games with the Portland Pirates in 2013-14, earning a nod as a Second Team All-Star.

The 5-foot-8, 175-pound forward also played in seven games with the Phoenix Coyotes last season, picking up two assists.

Miele has played 209 AHL games over his first three pro seasons, registering 62 goals and 117 assists for 179 points. He played in the AHL All-Star Classic as a rookie in 2012. Miele also has totaled two assists in 15 NHL games with the Coyotes.

Miele spent four seasons (2007-11) at Miami University, where current Griffins head coach Jeff Blashill was an assistant during his freshman season. Miele led the nation in scoring with 71 points as a senior and earned the 2011 Hobey Baker Award as the top player in college hockey.
