Moose edge Bulldogs in overtime

Defenseman Nolan Baumgartner scored at 2:49 of overtime to lift Manitoba over Hamilton by a 2-1 count on Monday at Copps Coliseum. The Moose improved to 6-3-0-0 on the season and will square off with the Bulldogs again on Tuesday.

The teams played a scoreless first two periods despite Hamilton holding a 21-10 advantage in shots over that span en route to a 32-18 edge in the final count.

It was Manitoba who finally struck first when forward Sergei Shirokov beat ‘Dogs goaltender Curtis Sanford at 6:43 of the third period. Assists went to Matt Pettinger and Marty Murray.

The Bulldogs, trying to avoid their first regulation loss, got the equalizer off the stick of Ryan Russell just 2:01 later, with Brock Trotter and Andre Benoit picking up the helpers.

Baumgartner, who netted his first goal of the season, was assisted in overtime by Mario Bliznak and Guillaume Desbiens.

Moose goaltender Cory Schneider sparkled in net, finishing with 31 saves on 32 shots to improve to 5-2-0 for the campaign.
