Moose tip Leafs in North battle

The Manitoba Moose scored three unanswered goals in the third period to complete a come-from-behind 6-4 victory over the St. John’s Maple Leafs at the MTS Centre on Thursday night.

Danny Groulx lead the way for Manitoba with two goals, and defenseman Kevin Bieksa continued his outstanding rookie season by netting the winning goal with 7:55 left in regulation.

The Moose actually took a 3-1 lead early in the second period before David Ling scored twice and Joel Kwiatkowski once to give the Maple Leafs a 4-3 cushion, which they held into the final nine minutes of the third period.

Kent Huskins finished with a goal and two assists and Nolan Baumgartner had three assists for the Moose, who got a total of 10 points (4g, 6a) from their blueliners on the night.

Kyle Wellwood and Tyler Beechey added two assists each for the Leafs.

The win moves Manitoba six points ahead of third-place St. John’s in the North Division. The second-place finisher will have home-ice advantage in a division semifinal playoff series against the third-place team.
