Army hired as head coach in Iowa

The Minnesota Wild have named Tim Army as the new head coach of their American Hockey League affiliate, the Iowa Wild.

Army, 55, joins the Wild with more than 30 years of experience as a coach in the NHL, the AHL, and the NCAA. He spent the 2017-18 season as an assistant with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, helping them to a record of 45-22-6-3 (99 points) and a trip to the Calder Cup Playoffs.

Previous to his stint with the Penguins, Army was an assistant with the Colorado Avalanche from 2011-17. He served as head coach at Providence College from 2005-11, and spent three seasons (2002-05) as head coach of the AHL’s Portland Pirates, posting a record of 99-109-32 and reaching the postseason twice.

A native of Providence, R.I., Army was also an assistant coach in the NHL with Anaheim (1993-97) and Washington (1997-2002), and at Providence College from 1987-93. He has also coached internationally for USA Hockey, including as an assistant for Team USA at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey and the IIHF World Championships in 1994, 1996 and 2013.

Army played one season in the AHL with the Maine Mariners, recording 27 points in 68 games during the 1985-86 campaign. He was a four-year letterman (1981-85) at Providence College, serving as the Friars’ captain during his senior season, and was a Hobey Baker Award finalist and the Hockey East conference scoring champion in 1985.
