Brassard named NHL Rookie of the Month for October

The National Hockey League announced today that Columbus Blue Jackets center Derick Brassard, who led all rookies and his club in scoring with nine points (4-5-9) in 10 games, has been named the NHL Rookie of the Month for October, edging six other rookies for the award.

Brassard recorded points in eight of 10 games and posted an even or plus rating in nine contests, including a third-period goal and plus-2 rating in the season opener, a 5-4 overtime victory at Dallas on Oct. 10. He tallied his first multiple-point game (one goal, one assist) in a 4-2 victory at Colorado on Oct. 30.

A Hull, Quebec, native, Brassard recorded 51 points (15-36-51) in 42 games as a first-year pro for the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch in 2007-08, and he was named the Rbk Edge/AHL Rookie of the Month for both October 2007 and April 2008. Brassard then finished second on the Crunch with 13 points (4-9-13) in 13 Calder Cup Playoff games last spring.

He also totaled two points (1-1-2) in a 17-game NHL debut with Columbus last season.

The 6-1, 190-lb. forward was sixth player chosen in the 2006 Entry Draft after he posted a 116-point season with QMJHL Drummondville and earned the Michael Bossy Trophy as the league’s top pro prospect.
