Bulldogs squeak by Marlies in Newfoundland


HAMILTON 4, TORONTO 3 (OT)

Hamilton fell behind by a pair of goals but battled back to eventually take a 4-3 win in overtime over Toronto in preseason action on Sunday at Mile One Centre in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Chad Anderson netted the game-winner for the Bulldogs at 3:44 of the extra session. Hamilton’s Yanick Lehoux scored twice in regulation, and Olivier Latendresse also lit the lamp.

David Desharnais chipped in a pair of assists in the winning effort, and goaltender Cedrick Desjardins picked up the victory with 22 saves on 25 shots.

Jeremy Williams and Tim Stapleton scored in the first period to give the Marlies a 2-0 lead. Stapleton, who factored into all three Toronto goals, scored again with 20 seconds left in the third period to tie the game.


WORCESTER 5, MANCHESTER 4
Jamie McGinn recorded two goals and Dan DaSilva scored the game winning goal with just 44 seconds left in the third period to propel the Worcester Sharks to a 5-4 victory over the Manchester Monarchs at the Wallace Civic Center in Fitchburg, Mass., on Sunday afternoon.

With the victory, the Sharks closed out their four game exhibition schedule at 2-2-0-0.

P.J. Fenton and Andrew Desjardins added goals for the Sharks.

The Monarchs received goals from Denny Johnson, Dinos Stamoulis, Jon Rheault, and Trevor Lewis.


HARTFORD 3, BRIDGEPORT 0
Matt Zaba made 21 saves Sunday to author the Hartford Wolf Pack’s second preseason shutout of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in a span of three days, a 3-0 decision at Champions Skating Center in Cromwell, Conn.

Dale Weise tallied a goal and an assist to pace the win for the Wolf Pack, and Hartford also got goals from Greg Moore and Tommy Pyatt.

Zaba’s toughest tests were breakaway opportunities by Sean Bentivoglio late in the first frame and Mike Walsh, on a power play, at 18:45 of the second.

The Wolf Pack held a 39-21 total shots advantage in the game over the Sound Tigers, whom they had blanked by a score of 7-0 Friday night in Northford, Conn. Hartford was 1/7 on the man-advantage, and Bridgeport went 0/5.


IOWA 4, QUAD CITY 3 (OT)
Drew Miller scored just 33 seconds into overtime to give Iowa a 4-3 win over Quad City at Bucs Arena in Urbandale, Iowa.

Ryan Dingle tallied two goals for the Chops, including the game-tying marker at 19:20 of the third period.

Iowa initially took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Dingle and Eric Boguniecki, but the Flames scored three straight to pull ahead.

Dan Ryder, Warren Peters, and Brandon Straub netted the goals for Quad City.

Chops goaltender Jean-Philippe Levasseur earned the victory with 32 saves on 35 shots. 


PORTLAND 5, ALBANY 3
Marek Zagrapan scored a pair of goals and Felix Schutz tallied the game-winner shorthanded as Portland outlasted Albany by a 5-3 count on Sunday night at the Wallace Civic Center in Fitchburg, Mass.

It was the second game of an AHL preseason doubleheader in Fitchburg, as Worcester edged Manchester by a 5-4 count earlier in the day.

Schutz’s goal broke a 3-3 tie at 14:07 of the third period, and Mathieu Darche sealed the Portland victory with an empty-net score.

Pirates rookie and 2008 Hobey Baker Award finalist Nathan Gerbe also netted a goal.

Matt Murley netted a pair of markers for the River Rats, while Mike Angelidis tallied his first of the preseason.
