The Vancouver Canucks, parent club of the AHL’s Manitoba Moose, today announced they have signed goaltender Tyler Weiman to a two-way contract. Additionally, the Moose announced the signing of goaltender David Shantz to an AHL deal.
Weiman, 26, appeared in 43 games last season with the AHL’s Lake Erie Monsters, earning a record of 21-18-3 with a goals against average of 2.48 and a save percentage of .912. The Saskatoon, SK native finished among the top 20 goalies in the AHL in most major categories in 2009-10, including goals against average, saves, save percentage, and minutes played.
Originally drafted by Colorado in 2002, Weiman has appeared in 186 AHL games in his six-year pro career, suiting up for Lowell, Albany, and Lake Erie. In that span, he has put together a mark of 84-85-10 with a goals against average of 2.77 and .909 save percentage.
Weiman was also selected to the Canadian All-Star Team as part of the 2009 AHL All-Star Classic held in Worcester, Mass. He appeared in one game in the NHL with the Colorado Avalanche back in 2007-08.
Shantz, 24, appeared in 30 games last season with the AHL’s Abbotsford Heat, earning a 15-10-4 record, 2.75 goals against average, and .908 save percentage. Shantz took over Abbotsford’s starting job in the season’s second half and added a 6-6 mark (2.68, .899) in 13 playoff appearances as the Heat reached the North Division Finals.
He also suited-up for 28 games with the Victoria Salmon Kings of the ECHL in 2009-10 where he boasted an 18-5-4 record, 2.88 goals against average, and .910 save percentage.
The Burlington, ON native has played in 58 career AHL games between Rochester and Abbotsford where he accumulated a 20-27-7 record, 3.09 goals against average, and 0.900 save percentage.
Shantz was originally drafted by the Florida Panthers in the second round, 37th overall, of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.
The Moose are in need of a replacement for former AHL All-Star and Goaltender of the Year Cory Schneider, who is likely to suit up full-time for Vancouver next season.
