Capitals sign AHL veteran Morgan

The Washington Capitals, parent club of the AHL’s Hershey Bears, have signed free-agent center Jason Morgan to a contract.

Morgan spent last season in the Minnesota Wild organization, playing 57 AHL games with the Houston Aeros and recording 12 goals and 14 assists for 26 points. He also skated in four NHL matches for the Wild in 2006-07.

A 6-foot-1, 194-pound native of St. John’s, Nfld., Morgan has played 506 career games in the AHL, totaling 93 goals and 188 assists for 281 points. He won a Calder Cup championship with Saint John in 2001.

A fifth-round draft pick by Los Angeles in 1995, Morgan has two goals and five assists in 44 career NHL contests with the Kings, Calgary, Nashville, Chicago and Minnesota.
