Deslauriers’ 41 saves help Falcons past Penguins

SPRINGFIELD 4, WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON 2
Springfield jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two periods and goaltender Jeff Deslauriers made it stand up as the Falcons defeated Wilkes-Barre Scranton, 4-2, on Saturday at the MassMutual Center. Desluariers, who played 40 games in a Penguins uniform last season, stopped 41 of 43 shots and improved to 6-2-2 on the season with the victory.

Jean-Francois Jacques, another former Penguin, led the Falcons’ offense with a pair of goals. Rick Berry and Theo Peckham also scored.

Marc Pouliot, yet another Falcon who once played in Wilkes-Barre, contributed two assists in the victory.

The Penguins attempted a third-period comeback, as Tim Wallace and Nathan Smith lit the lamp in the final stanza. Overall, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton put 37 shots on goal over the final 40 minutes.

Springfield has now won consecutive games and improved to 7-5-0-2 overall.


TORONTO 5, GRAND RAPIDS 4
Toronto allowed the game’s first goal, scored the next five, and then held on for a 5-4 road win over Grand Rapids at Van Andel Arena.

Robbie Earl and Kris Newbury each tallied a goal and a helper for the Marlies, who also received goals from Simon Gamache and Ben Ondrus.

Anton Stralman and Darryl Boyce each recorded a pair of assists for Toronto, which improved its North Division-leading record to 9-0-0-2.

The Griffins had goals scored by Carl Corazzini, Ryan Oulahen, and Johan Ryno in the losing effort.


CHICAGO 4, HAMILTON 3
Jesse Schultz and Andre Deveaux scored third-period goals to give Chicago a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Hamilton at Copps Coliseum.

Brett Sterling scored twice for the Wolves in the first period, giving the second-year pro and reigning AHL rookie of the year four goals in his last two games.

After allowing Sterling’s two goals, the Bulldogs responded and got out to a 3-2 lead on the strength of markers from Greg Stewart, Eric Manlow, and Janne Lahti.

Schultz lit the lamp just 50 seconds into the third, and Deveaux provided the game-winner at 2:16. The Wolves (10-0-1-0) kept pace with Toronto as the only AHL teams yet to suffer a regulation loss.


HARTFORD 4, ALBANY 1
Hartford scored a pair of goals in the second period and added two more in the third on its way to a 4-1 victory over Albany at the Hartford Civic Center.

Lauri Korpikoski and rookie Brodie Dupont each recorded a goal and an assist for the Wolf Pack, and Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau totaled three assists on the night.

Jake Taylor and Hugh Jessiman also scored for Hartford, which is 5-2-0-0 in its last seven games.

The River Rats initially got out to a 1-0 lead on the back of a first-period goal by Mike Angelidis.

Goaltender Chris Holt picked up the win for the Wolf Pack, who outshot Albany by a 32-16 margin.


PHILADELPHIA 2, BINGHAMTON 0
Binghamton suffered its third shutout in as many games, this one by a 2-0 final at the hands of Philadelphia at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.

Ryan Potulny and Boyd Kane scored first-period goals for the Phantoms, and that’s all they needed in improving to 12-1-1-0 on the campaign.

Goaltender Scott Munroe stopped all 29 shots sent his way to garner his first shutout of the season.

The Senators have not found the back of the net since Matt Carkner scored at 13:37 of the third period in a 4-3 win over Syracuse on Nov. 3. Binghamton has been without a goal in 186 minutes and 23 seconds of hockey since that goal.


LOWELL 5, MANCHESTER 3
Lowell scored four times in the second period and withstood a third-period charge to defeat Manchester by a 5-3 final at the Verizon Wireless Arena.

Barry Tallackson led the Devils with two goals and an assist, while Mark Pandolfo, Noah Clarke, and Ivan Khomutov also scored. Benoit Mondou assisted on three of the five tallies.

Manchester received goals from Teddy Purcell, Marc-Andre Cliche, and Gabe Gauthier, with the latter two coming in the third period.

Devils goaltender Jordan Parise made 36 saves, helping Lowell move to 3-0-0-0 on the season against the Monarchs.


PORTLAND 4, PROVIDENCE 3 (OT)
Bobby Ryan’s power-play goal 1:25 into overtime lifted Portland to a 4-3 victory over Providence at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Brandon Segal paced the Pirates in regulation with two goals, and Clay Wilson also lit the lamp for the home team.

Providence’s Sean Curry forced the game to overtime with a game-tying goal at 16:37 of the third period. He also added an assist for a two-point night.

Jeff Hoggan (1-1-2) also had multiple-points for the P-Bruins, and Martins Karsums netted the Bruins’ other goal.

The Bruins finished their season-opening 10-game road trip in first place in the Atlantic Division at 8-1-1-0. They will play their home-opener this coming Wednesday against the same Pirates.


SYRACUSE 4, ROCHESTER 0
Goaltender Tomas Popperle earned a shutout with 22 saves and the Crunch received goals from four different skaters in a 4-0 victory over Rochester at the Onondaga War Memorial at Oncenter.

Philippe Dupuis got the scoring started on the power play at 2:52 of the second period.

Derek Dorsett made it a 2-0 game at 3:08 of the third, and both Kris Beech and Derek MacKenzie sealed the win with tallies in the game’s final minute. Beech’s went into an empty net.

The victory marked Popperle’s first shutout of the season and pushed the Syracuse netminder’s overall record to 5-6-0.


QUAD CITY 3, LAKE ERIE 2 (SO)
Visiting Quad City scored three times in the shootout to take a 3-2 win over Lake Erie at Quicken Loans Arena.

Grant Stevenson, Dustin Boyd, and Derek Couture all scored in the shootout for the Flames, who have now won consecutive games for the first time this season.

Quad City received regulation goals from Cam Cunning and Carsen Germyn, who now has four goals in his last four games (4-0-4).

Stephen Margeson and David Jones scored for the Monsters, with the latter goal evening the score at 2-2 with just over 11 minutes remaining in regulation.

Flames goaltender Curtis McElhinney picked up the win with 25 saves on 27 shots.


PEORIA 5, ROCKFORD 4 (OT)
Nicholas Drazenovic’s goal at 1:32 of overtime completed Peoria’s comeback, as the Rivermen posted a 5-4 win over Rockford at Carver Arena.

Jeff Woywitka paced the Peoria offense during regulation with a pair of goals, and Trent Whitfield’s power play goal at 5:01 of the third period tied the contest at 4-4 and wound up pushing it to overtime.

The Rivermen’s Mike Glumac also lit the lamp, and eight different players earned one assist each in the victory.

Bryan Bickell scored twice to lead the IceHogs, who also received goals from Jonathan Paiement and Petri Kontiola in the losing effort.


IOWA 3, SAN ANTONIO 1
The Stars scored twice within nine seconds in the third period to defeat San Antonio by a 3-1 final at the Wells Fargo Arena.

Mario Scalzo tallied his first of the season at 2:50 of the third, and Janos Vas followed with his fifth at 2:59.

Loui Eriksson also scored for Iowa, and goaltender Philippe Sauve earned the win with 20 saves on 21 shots.

San Antonio’s lone goal was scored by Bill Thomas, and it was an unassisted marker at 17:57 of the second period.


MANITOBA 4, MILWAUKEE 3
Manitoba scored three times in the third period to erase a 3-1 deficit and come away with a 4-3 win over Milwaukee at the MTS Centre. The win allowed the Moose a split of the teams’ two-game set in Winnipeg.

Mason Raymond, Michael Grabner, and Nathan McIver all notched goals in the third for Manitoba. All three came within a span of 5:13.

Mike Keane scored the Moose’s first goal of the night, it coming at 17:33 of the second period.

The Admirals scored three second-period goals to establish their 3-1 edge, with John Vigilante, Cody Franson, and Matt Ellison doing the honors.

Manitoba goaltender Drew MacIntyre secured the victory with 23 saves on 26 shots.


HOUSTON 5, WORCESTER 1
Houston broke a tight game open with four third-period goals on its way to a 5-1 win over Worcester at the Toyota Center.

After a scoreless first period, the Aeros got on the scoreboard first when Peter Olvecky netted his second goal in three nights at 6:42 of the second period, on the power play.

Worcester responded just 1:20 later with a power play goal of its own, as Mike Iggulden notched his team-leading eighth of the season.

In the third period, Houston received goals from Petr Kalus, Moises Gutierrez, Morten Madsen, and Erik Reitz. The latter two came with the Aeros on a man-advantage.

Aeros goaltender Barry Brust made 33 saves on 34 shots in the winning effort, while the Sharks finished their two-game Texas tour at 1-1-0-0.
