Emery’s 46-save night leads B-Sens to victory

Niko Dimitrakos scored two goals and 2002-03 AHL All-Rookie goaltender Ray Emery made 46 saves in his second rehab start to lead the Senators to a 5-2 win over Hershey on Saturday at the Broome County Arena. Danny Bois added a goal and two assists for Binghamton, which won for the first time this season.

Dimitrakos scored his two goals in the 2nd period, giving Binghamton a 3-1 lead that they would never relinquish.

Matt Kinch and Josh Hennessy also scored for the Senators, who are now 1-2-0-0 for the season.

The Bears, who dropped to 0-2-0-0, received goals from Chris Bourque and Grant Potulny in the losing effort.


NORFOLK 2, ALBANY 1 (SO)
Norfolk’s Marek Kvapil scored the only shootout goal for either team to help the Admirals defeat Albany, 2-1, spoiling the River Rats’ home opener at the Times Union Center.

Admirals goaltender Ryan Munce, who stopped 36 of 37 shots through regulation and overtime, came up big in the shootout as well by denying all five Albany shooters.

David Schneider gave the visitors an early lead with a power play goal at 5:52 of the 1st period.

The River Rats got the equalizer with just 12 seconds remaining in the 2nd period when Jerome Samson scored on the man-advantage.

Albany’s Michael Leighton took the loss in goal despite making 30 saves on 31 shots on the night.


PHILADELPHIA 3 , WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON 2
Boyd Kane broke a 2-2 deadlock in the 3rd period and the Phantoms held on for a 3-2 win over Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in their first road game of the season.

The Phantoms elevated their record to 4-0-0-0, tops in the AHL in the early going.

The teams alternated goals through the first 40 minutes. Kyle Greentree and Darroll Powe scored for Philadelphia, while Jeff Taffe netted both goals for the Penguins.

Kane tallied the eventual game-winner for the Phantoms on the power play at 4:13 of the 3rd period.

Philadelphia goaltender Brian Boucher won his fourth game in as many starts, making 26 saves on 28 shots.

Ty Conklin stopped 24 of 27 in the losing effort for the Penguins, who will travel to Philadelphia for a rematch with the Phantoms on Sunday.


WORCESTER 3, PORTLAND 2
Worcester used 1st-period surge of three goals within in a 2:15 span, including two within 31 seconds of each other, and held on for a 3-2 win over Portland in their home opener at the DCU Center. The Sharks improved to 2-0-0-0 on the season.

Portland took the early advantage when Jason King notched a power play marker only 1:43 after the opening face-off.

However, the Sharks received 1st-period tallies from Tom Cavanagh, Mike Iggulden, and Nate Raduns, with the first two coming on the power play. Iggulden factored into all three goals, picking up a pair of assists.

Tyler Bouck brought the Pirates within a goal at 4:26 of the 3rd period, but that’s as close as they would get.

Worcester goaltender Thomas Greiss earned the win, making 24 saves.


MANCHESTER 4, SPRINGFIELD 3
For the second straight night, the Monarchs started strong, allowed their opponent to get back in the game, and came up big at the end to secure a victory. Saturday’s version was a 4-3 win over Springfield at Verizon Wireless Arena.

A night after jumping out to a 3-0 lead over Hartford after 20 minutes, the Monarchs started strong again, this time taking a 2-0 advantage into the 1st intermission.

David Meckler tallied his second goal of the season just 39 seconds into the contest, and Matt Moulson made it 2-0 on the power play at the 9:30 mark.

After the teams exchanged the next two goals, Springfield’s Patrick Thoresen lit the lamp at 16:53 of the 2nd period and 16:57 of the 3rd, the latter tying the game at 3-3.

Gabe Gauthier scored the game-winner for the home team just 61 seconds later, at 17:58.

Goaltender Erik Ersberg earned the win in his first game for the Monarchs, stopping 20 of 23 shots.


LOWELL 3, BRIDGEPORT 2
Petr Vrana and Noah Clarke scored 3rd-period goals to vault the Devils to a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Bridgeport in their home opener at Tsongas Arena.

Ben Walter and Jeremy Colliton scored for Bridgeport, both goals coming in the 1st period to give the Sound Tigers a lead that they would hold through the 2nd period and the early part of the 3rd.

Vrana tied the score at 7:27 of the final stanza, and Clarke scored the game-winner on the power play at 13:06, giving Lowell its first win of the campaign.

Stephen Gionta also scored for the Devils, his goal initially providing a 1-0 lead for the home team in the opening period.

Frank Doyle picked up the win in net, making 16 saves on the night.

Joey MacDonald stopped 35 shots in the losing effort, as his Sound Tigers were outshot, 38-18, in the game.


HAMILTON 6, LAKE ERIE 1
The visiting Bulldogs scored six unanswered goals after surrendering the game’s first one on their way to a 6-1 victory over Lake Erie at Quicken Loans Arena.

Jonathan Ferland scored a pair of goals for Hamilton, who also received markers from Sergei Kostitsyn, Duncan Milroy, Andrew Archer, and Maxim Lapierre.

Hamilton scored four power play goals in the game, going 4-for-11, while holding the Monsters scoreless in five man-advantage situations.

Lake Erie received its only goal from Codey Burki, which gave them the early lead at 1:19 of the 1st period.

The Bulldogs put a total of 40 shots on goal, of which Monsters goaltender Tyler Weiman stopped 34 in the losing effort.

Hamilton netminder Yann Danis made 28 saves to backstop the win.


HARTFORD 5, SYRACUSE 3
Nigel Dawes potted a goal and two assists to pace Hartford to a 5-3 win at Syracuse, the Wolf Pack’s first victory of the season.

Hartford struck first 3:22 into the game when Artem Anisimov scored his third goal in the past two nights, with Dawes and Jordan Owens receiving assists.

After the Crunch’s Geoff Platt evened things, Dawes gave the Wolf Pack the lead for good at the 11:24 mark. Ivan Baranka picked up an assist and would finish with a pair of helpers on the night.

The Crunch attempted a comeback after falling behind, 3-1, as Marc Methot and Derick Brassard scored power play goals. However, Hartford’s Lauri Korpikoski sealed the victory with an empty net goal in the final seconds.

Darius Kasparaitis and Alex Bourret also scored for the Wolf Pack, and Al Montoya made 20 saves in net to earn the victory.

The Crunch’s Tomas Popperle stopped 41 of 45 shots in the losing effort.


PROVIDENCE 4, ROCHESTER 3
The Bruins received goals from four different players in a 4-3 win at Rochester, the team’s first visit to Blue Cross Arena since Nov. 2, 2001.

Nate Thompson, Sean Curry, Jeff Hoggan, and Matt Lashoff scored for the P-Bruins, who outshot the Americans by a 44-13 margin in the game and 23-2 in the 2nd period alone.

Rookie goaltender Tuukka Rask, a 1st-round draft pick in 2005 by Toronto, secured his second win in as many outings with 10 saves.

Dylan Hunter, Dan Collins, and Kenndal McArdle scored for the Americans, who fell to 2-2-1-0 on the season.

Rochester goaltender David Shantz kept the Americans in the game by making 40 saves on the night.


CHICAGO 2, MILWAUKEE 1 (OT)
Brian Fahey scored on the power play 1:46 into overtime to lift Chicago to a 2-1 win over Milwaukee in their home opener at Allstate Arena.

The Wolves, who were winless at home in the regular season against the Admirals a season ago, also received a goal from Jason Krog to break a scoreless tie in the 2nd period.

Antti Pihlstrom tallied the equalizer for Milwaukee at 14:01 of the 2nd stanza, and the game remained tied through the remainder of regulation.

Fahey, in his second year with the Wolves after scoring 11 goals last season, gave the Wolves the overtime win off assists by Jesse Schultz and Nathan Oystrick.

Ondrej Pavelec made 22 saves in the winning effort for Chicago.


ROCKFORD 7, IOWA 3
The IceHogs scored three goals in the opening period and never looked back in a 7-3 road win over Iowa, marking the first victory in franchise history for Rockford.

Seven different IceHogs found the scoresheet in the win, with Cam Barker, Michael Blunden, and Petri Kontiola all solving Stars goaltender Steve Silverthorn in the 1st period to set the tone.

Rockford also had goals from David Bolland, Jack Skille, Evan Brophey, and Prestin Ryan. Brophey finished with a three-point night (1-2-3) and a +3 rating.

Paul Szczechura, Konstantin Pushkarev, and Janos Vas scored for the Stars, with the latter two adding an assist each for multiple-point showings.

Veteran goaltender Wade Flaherty made 34 saves to earn the win for the IceHogs.


GRAND RAPIDS 4, MANITOBA 3 (OT)
Carl Corazzini’s overtime goal lifted Grand Rapids to a 4-3 victory over Manitoba, allowing the Griffins to go 2-0-0-0 in their two-game visit to the MTS Centre in Winnipeg. Grand Rapids had taken a 4-2 victory from the Moose on Wednesday.

In Saturday’s game, Brad Moran and Luc Bourdon each posted a goal and an assist for Manitoba, with Moran’s goal tying the game at 3-3 at 12:44 of the 3rd period.

The Griffins received regulation goals from Mark Hartigan, Adam Keefe, and Ryan Oulahen to build a 3-1 advantage by the 2nd intermission.

Corazzini then provided the winning goal at the 1:51 mark of overtime.

Adam Berkhoel stopped 25 of 28 shots in the win for Grand Rapids, which held the Moose scoreless on eight power play opportunities.


PEORIA 3, HOUSTON 1
Yan Stastny scored two goals to pace visiting Peoria to a 3-1 win over Houston at the Toyota Center.

Stastny both opened and closed the game’s scoring. He lit the lamp just 1:01 into the game and provided insurance at 18:52 of the 3rd period, on the power play, for what had been a 2-1 Rivermen lead.

Serge Payer scored for the Aeros midway through the 1st period, which at the time tied the score at 1-1.

It stayed deadlocked until Alexander Hellstrom scored the eventual game-winning goal for Peoria at 6:11 of the 3rd.

Rivermen goaltender Marek Schwarz moved his record to 2-0-0 on the season by making 26 saves on 27 shots.

Nolan Schaefer made 32 saves in net for Houston, which dropped to 0-2-1-0 with the defeat.
