Falcons, Grizzlies deal again

The Falcons and Grizzlies are swapping again.

On Monday afternoon, Springfield loaned defenseman Terry Virtue to Utah in exchange for the services of defenseman Nikos Tselios.

The deal comes on the heels of Saturday’s transaction which sent Jarrod Skalde to the Grizzlies and Jason Jaspers to the Falcons.

Tselios, 25, has registered a goal and an assist in five games with Utah this season. The 6-foot-5, 226-pound native of Oak Park, Ill., returns to Springfield where he spent all of last season and 13 games during the 2002-03 campaign. Tselios recorded 13 points (5g, 8a) and 105 PIM in 75 games with the Falcons last season.

Tselios was the Carolina Hurricanes’ first-round selection (22nd overall) in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. In 223 career games in the AHL, Tselios has posted 48 points (13g, 35a) and 249 PIM.

Virtue registered two points (1g, 1a) and 21 PIM in 13 games with the Falcons this season. The two-time Calder Cup champion heads to the Grizzlies with 83 goals and 275 assists for 358 points in 784 career AHL games.

Springfield has also signed free-agent left wing Derek Bekar. Because he had been playing in Europe, Bekar, who scored 24 goals with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers last season, must clear waivers prior to joining the Falcons.
