Flyers sign four, including Cup captain Kane

The Philadelphia Flyers, parent club of the AHL’s Philadelphia Phantoms, announced on Thursday that they have signed left wing Boyd Kane, center Daniel Corso, defenseman Martin Grenier and right wing Matt Ellison each to a one-year contract.

Per club policy, financial terms were not disclosed.

Kane, 28, captained the Philadelphia Phantoms to the Calder Cup championship in 2005, then duplicated the feat with the Hershey Bears in 2006. Last season, he recorded 20 goals and 29 assists for 49 points along with 185 penalty minutes in 74 regular-season games for Hershey, and added four goals and nine assists in 21 playoff matches.

Kane also appeared in five NHL games with Washington in 2005-06, registering one assist.

In 475 career AHL contests with Hershey, Philadelphia, Springfield and Hartford, Kane has tallied 88 goals and 132 assists for 220 points, to go with 910 PIM. He has also picked up 10 goals and 20 assists in 75 Calder Cup Playoff games.

The native of Swift Current, Sask., has one assist in 12 career NHL matches.

Corso, 28, played the last two seasons in Germany after skating in 248 AHL games with Chicago, Binghamton and Worcester from 1998-2004, recording 69 goals and 114 assists for 183 points. In 77 career NHL matches with St. Louis and Atlanta, Corso has registered 14 goals and 11 assists.

Corso, a native of Montreal, was drafted by the Blues in 1996.

Matt Ellison played in 48 games for the Phantoms last season after two years in Norfolk.

Grenier, 25, posted 12 points (4g, 8a) and a team-leading 278 penalty minutes in 76 regular-season games for the Hartford Wolf Pack last season. A former second-round draft choice (by Colorado in 1999), Grenier has amassed 15 goals and 35 assists for 50 points, along with 1,137 PIM, in 291 career AHL games with Hartford, Manitoba and Springfield.

A native of Laval, Que., Grenier has one goal in 15 career NHL games with Phoenix and Vancouver.

Ellison, 22, notched 12 goals and 13 assists for 25 points in 48 AHL games with the Phantoms in 2005-06 after being acquired from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Patrick Sharp and Eric Meloche. Ellison also had three goals and 10 assists for 13 points in 31 NHL games with Philadelphia and Chicago last season.

In three AHL seasons, Ellison has recorded 40 goals and 71 assists for 111 points in 190 games with Philadelphia and Norfolk.
