The Carolina Hurricanes, parent club of the AHL’s Albany River Rats, have acquired goaltender Michael Leighton from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for a seventh-round pick in Saturday’s NHL Entry Draft.
Leighton, 26, owns a record of 100-80-21 with 22 shutouts in 208 career AHL appearances. Last season, he posted a 10-6-3 mark with a 2.14 goals-against average and a .920 save percentage in 21 AHL games with Portland and Philadelphia.
He went 2-2-0 in five NHL appearances between Nashville and Philadelphia and also spent time in the Anaheim and Montreal organizations in 2006-07.
A 1999 draft pick by Chicago, Leighton was an AHL All-Star and an All-Rookie Team selection with Norfolk in 2001-02.
