Jets agree to terms with pair

The Winnipeg Jets, parent club of the AHL’s St. John’s IceCaps, have agreed to terms with forward Ben Maxwell and goaltender Mark Dekanich on new contracts.

Maxwell, 24, played 43 games with St. John’s last season, recording eight goals and 17 assists for 25 points. He also had three goals and four assists in 15 playoff games as the IceCaps reached the Eastern Conference finals.

Maxwell also appeared in 15 NHL games between Winnipeg and Anaheim in 2011-12, totaling one goal and five assists.

The North Vancouver, B.C., native has played in 47 career NHL games with Montreal, Atlanta, Winnipeg and Anaheim, notching two goals and six assists for eight points. He has also played 222 games in the AHL for Hamilton, Chicago and St. John’s, registering 57 goals and 111 assists for 168 points.

Maxwell was originally drafted by Montreal in the second round, 49th overall, in the 2006 NHL Draft.

Dekanich, 26, played five games with the Springfield Falcons during
an injury-plagued 2011-12 season. In 127 career AHL games with Springfield and Milwaukee, Dekanich has a record of 66-40-12 with a 2.22 goals-against average, a .920 save percentage and nine shutouts.

In 2010-11, Dekanich led the AHL in save percentage (.931) and ranked third in GAA (2.02) with Milwaukee, and he also appeared in the AHL All-Star Classic.

Dekanich made his NHL debut with Nashville during the 2010-11 season, stopping 22 of 25 shots in his only appearance. He was originally drafted by the Nashville Predators in the fifth round, 146th overall, in the 2006 NHL Draft.
