Krog’s seven-point stance leads Wolves to rout

Jason Krog recorded the first seven-point night by an AHL player in nearly eight years, leading Chicago to a 10-5 rout of Peoria at Carver Arena on Saturday night.

Krog scored three goals and assisted on four others, surging into the AHL scoring lead with 25 points in 12 games this season.

Providence teammates Landon Wilson and Randy Robitaille were the last AHL players to record seven points in a game. Both did so in a 14-2 win over Syracuse on Nov. 25, 1998.

With Rivermen newcomer Joel Perrault serving a charging major, the Wolves scored three times in just over two minutes midway through the first period, and Jordan LaVallee tacked on a goal before intermission to make it 4-0.

Peoria answered with goals from Trent Whitfield and David Backes to cut the deficit in half early in the second, but the Wolves made quick work again, this time scoring five goals in 3:36 to make it 9-2.

Brett Sterling had two goals and three assists for Chicago, Darren Haydar had a goal and two assists and Braydon Coburn recorded three assists. The Wolves finished with six power-play goals on the night.

The win, reminiscent of Chicago’s 11-5 win over Peoria last Dec. 30, let the Wolves improve to 7-0-0-0 on the road in 2006-07.


PROVIDENCE 4, ALBANY 3 (OT)
Bobby Allen scored 21 seconds into overtime to give Providence a 4-3 win over Albany at the Pepsi Arena.

Allen, who played the last two seasons with the River Rats, scored during a power play after Ryan Bayda got a major for high-sticking late in regulation.

Kris Versteeg scored twice for the Bruins, who have earned a point in five straight games (4-0-1-0).

Keith Aucoin led Albany with a goal and two assists.


HERSHEY 5, SYRACUSE 0
Eric Fehr scored twice and Frederic Cassivi made 33 saves as Hershey blanked Syracuse, 5-0.

Alexandre Giroux added a goal and two assists, Matt Hendricks had a goal and an assist and Chad Wiseman also scored for the Bears, who moved to 8-0-0-1 on the season.

It was the 196th win and 22nd shutout of Cassivi’s AHL career.


GRAND RAPIDS 5, MANITOBA 4 (SO)
Kip Miller had two goals and an assist in regulation and netted the decisive score in the shootout as Grand Rapids edged Manitoba, 5-4.

The Griffins completed an eight-game homestand at 4-3-0-1. The teams now head to Winnipeg for two more meetings early next week.

The Moose, who entered the night in an 0-for-24 drought, scored all four of their goals on the power play. Grand Rapids scored once on the power play and once while shorthanded.

The game featured 24 power plays in all, including four in overtime.


NORFOLK 4, HARTFORD 3 (OT)
Norfolk improved to 8-0-1-1 on the season with a 4-3 overtime win at Hartford, as Brandon Bochenski netted his second goal of the night at the 1:14 mark of the extra session.

Bochenski added two assists for a four-point night, and Dustin Byfuglien and Troy Brouwer finished with a goal and an assist each.

Lauri Korpikoski and Dwight Helminen had a goal and an assist apiece for the Wolf Pack (2-7-1-0).


PHILADELPHIA 5, WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON 4
Petr Nedved, Denis Tolpeko and Marty Murray each recorded three points to lead Philadelphia to a 5-4 win over in-state rival Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

It was the Phantoms’ first game of the season at the Wachovia Spectrum. They had played their home games next door at the Wachovia Center prior to Saturday.

Nedved finished with two goals, including the game-winner with 2:02 left in regulation, as the Phantoms ended a six-game losing skid.

Marc-Antoine Pouliot led the Penguins with two goals and an assist, but Wilkes-Barre still saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end.


SPRINGFIELD 3, WORCESTER 2
Jean Desrochers scored his first two career AHL goals and Norm Milley got the winner in the final minute of the second period as Springfield held off Worcester, 3-2.

Doug O’Brien recorded two assists for the Falcons and Sean Burke made 21 saves.

Grant Stevenson led the Sharks with a goal and an assist. Nolan Schaefer finished with 34 stops.


HOUSTON 3, HAMILTON 2 (SO)
Josh Harding made 36 saves and Houston had a perfect shootout to earn a 3-2 win in Hamilton, site of the Aeros’ 2003 Calder Cup championship clincher.

Ben Thomson and Joel Ward scored in regulation for Houston, and Thomson, Roman Voloshenko and Matt Foy made the Aeros 3-for-3 in the shootout.

Harding stopped 15 shots in the first period, nine in the second, nine in the third, three in overtime and all three in the shootout.

Andrei Kostitsyn led the Bulldogs with a goal and an assist.


LOWELL 3, BINGHAMTON 2
Jordan Parise made 44 saves for his first professional win, leading Lowell to a 3-2 win at Binghamton.

Aaron Voros, Chris Minard and Rod Pelley scored for the Devils, who improved to 3-1-0-1 in their last five games.

Serge Payer and Jeff Heerema scored power-play goals in the third period for the Senators, who have lost four in a row at home since an opening-night win over Syracuse.


BRIDGEPORT 2, PORTLAND 0
Wade Dubielewicz made 31 saves for his first shutout of the year, leading Bridgeport to a 2-0 win in Portland.

Kevin Mitchell’s first goal of the season broke a scoreless tie with 10:03 left in the third period, and Jeff Tambellini added an insurance tally 73 seconds later.

Michael Leighton made 24 saves for the Pirates, who have lost four of their last five.


ROCHESTER 2, MANCHESTER 1
David Booth and Stefan Meyer scored in the final minute of the second period and Adam Dennis finished with 26 saves as Rochester edged Manchester, 2-1.

Meyer had a goal and an assist and Daniel Paille and Michael Funk had single assists as the Amerks broke the 0-0 deadlock by scoring twice in 39 seconds.

Jason LaBarbera made 39 saves in defeat for the Monarchs.


IOWA 3, OMAHA 0
After losing twice to Omaha last week, Iowa returned the favor with a 3-0 win over the Knights at the Civic Auditorium on Saturday.

Tobias Stephan made 24 saves for his first AHL shutout, helping the Stars run their record to 9-2-0-0 and pass Omaha for first place in the West Division.

Mike Green, Loui Eriksson and Mark Ardelan scored for Iowa, and Junior Lessard recorded two assists.

Brent Krahn stopped 21 shots for the Knights, who have lost two in a row after an eight-game winning streak.


SAN ANTONIO 4, TORONTO 3
Jeff Taffe’s goal with 42 seconds left in the second period was the difference as San Antonio got past visiting Toronto, 4-3.

Daniel Winnik, Ryan Garlock and Tyson Nash also scored for the Rampage, making a winner out of Philippe Sauve (20 saves).

Michael Schutte, Brett Engelhardt and Kris Newbury had the goals for the Marlies, while Justin Pogge made 36 saves in defeat.
