Panthers acquire Kennedy, assign to Rochester

The Florida Panthers have acquired forward Tim Kennedy and a 2011 third-round draft pick from the New York Rangers in exchange for defenseman Bryan McCabe.

Kennedy has been assigned to Florida’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Rochester Americans.

Kennedy, 24, has recorded 12 goals and 30 assists for 42 points in 53 AHL games with Connecticut this season. He had signed as a free agent with the Rangers on Aug. 30, 2010.

Kennedy was the top-scoring rookie in the AHL in 2008-09, tallying 18 goals and 49 assists for 67 points in 73 games with the Portland Pirates, tying for the team lead in points. He added one assist in five Calder Cup Playoff games.

In 2009-10, Kennedy led all Buffalo rookie forwards in goals (10), assists (16), points (26) and shots (98), and led all Sabres rookies in penalty minutes (50) and game-winning goals (three). He recorded his first career NHL point with an assist on Oct. 10, 2009, at Nashville, and notched his first career goal on Oct. 28, 2009, at New Jersey.

A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Kennedy was a sixth-round draft pick by Washington in 2005 and played three seasons at Michigan State University.
