Derek Grant scored twice in the final 15 seconds of regulation, but Scott Laughton‘s goal while the teams skated 3-on-3 in overtime gave the Lehigh Valley Phantoms a 5-4 win over the Binghamton Senators at the Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton on Saturday night.
Grant tipped home Matt Puempel‘s shot with 14.1 seconds left in the third period to cut the Phantoms’ lead to 4-3, then banged home a centering feed from Shane Prince with 5.4 seconds remaining to force the improbable tie.
Laughton won it for Lehigh Valley at 5:40 of overtime, racing in up the right wing and snapping a shot home for his fifth goal of the young season — tops among AHL rookies.
Prince and Jean-Gabriel Pageau also scored for Binghamton, which led 1-0 and 2-1 early on.
Nick Cousins, Robert Hagg, Andrew Gordon and Austin Fyten had the regulation goals for the Phantoms, who finished the wild night with a 41-40 advantage in shots on goal.
