Red Wings, Rangers trade AHL’ers

The Detroit Red Wings, parent club of the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins, have acquired forward Jordan Owens from the New York Rangers, parent club of the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, in exchange for forward Kris Newbury.

Owens, a 23-year-old Toronto native, has six goals and 13 assists for 19 points in 50 games for Hartford this season. The third-year pro has totaled 25 goals and 45 assists for 70 points in 170 career AHL games since joining Hartford for the end of the 2006-07 season.

Owens set career highs in 2008-09, posting 12 goals, 25 assists and 37 points in 67 games for the Wolf Pack.

Newbury, 28, has 11 goals, 22 assists and 144 penalty minutes in 52 games for Grand Rapids in 2009-10. An AHL All-Star in 2007, Newbury spent his first six pro seasons in the Toronto Maple Leafs organization. He has 76 goals and 158 assists for 234 points in 377 career AHL games with Grand Rapids, Toronto and St. John’s.

Newbury also has one goal in four NHL games with the Red Wings this season, and shows four goals and three assists in 48 career NHL outings.
