Wednesday’s Boxscores

WORCESTER 2, PORTLAND 1
Worcester punched its ticket to the 2009 Calder Cup Playoffs on Wednesday with its fifth consecutive victory, a 2-1 decision over Portland at the DCU Center. Captain Ryan Vesce and Dan DaSilva netted goals for the Sharks, and goaltender Thomas Greiss made 24 saves on 25 shots.

Vesce opened the game’s scoring with his 24th goal of the season 6:53 into the first period. Patrick Traverse and Tom Cavanagh picked up assists on Vesce’s team-leading 70th point of the campaign (24-46-70).

After a scoreless middle period, the Pirates’ Felix Schutz tied it just 48 seconds into the third frame, with assists going to Colton Fretter and captain Tyler Bouck.

Worcester grabbed the lead for good when DaSilva slapped home the rebound of a Steven Zalewski shot at the 3:18 mark.

Greiss (29-23-2) has been between the pipes for all five victories during Worcester’s current streak, which matches a Sharks season high previously attained from Nov. 16-28.

Worcester is set to return to postseason action for the first time since 2007 and will square off with either Hartford or Providence in the Atlantic Division semifinals.

With Manchester’s loss to Hartford, Portland’s magic number to clinch the Atlantic’s fourth and final entry was reduced to one.

HARTFORD 4, MANCHESTER 3
Mark Bell’s shorthanded goal with 20.2 seconds left in regulation lifted Hartford to a 4-3 road win over Manchester at the Verizon Wireless Arena.
