Wolves bounce Rivermen in shootout

Before a crowd of 3,584 at Carver Arena on Saturday night, the Peoria Rivermen lost their first preseason game as a member of the American Hockey League. After three hard-fought periods of regulation time and a scoreless overtime, the Chicago Wolves prevailed, 6-5, in a shootout.

Pat Dwyer, a rookie out of Western Michigan University, had two goals and two assists for the Wolves, who scored four power-play goals on the night.

Chicago held a 1-0 lead until a wild stretch that saw the teams combine for nine goals in the final 14:02 of regulation. Colin Hemingway tallied three goals for the Rivermen — all on the power play — and Aaron MacKenzie‘s goal with 48 seconds left forced overtime.

Gregg Naumenko stopped all 17 shots he faced in net for the Wolves.

The teams will meet again Monday night in Hoffman Estates, Ill.
