Oilers sign defenseman Belle

The Edmonton Oilers, parent club of the AHL’s Oklahoma City Barons, announced on Tuesday that they have agreed to terms with defenseman Shawn Belle on a one-year contract.

Belle, 25, spent last season with the Hamilton Bulldogs in the American Hockey League where he played in 70 games collecting 19 points (three goals, 16 assists) and 69 penalty minutes. He also played in two games for the Montreal Canadiens but was held pointless.

The 6’1”, 220lbs rearguard was originally drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the first round, 30th overall, in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. Belle has also seen NHL stops in Dallas and Minnesota. In 11 career NHL games the Edmonton, Alta., native has one assist.

Belle has appeared in 311 AHL games with Hamilton, Houston and Iowa, where he has scored 13 goals and 46 assists for 59 points.
