Panthers add defenseman Roy

The Florida Panthers, parent club of the AHL’s Rochester Americans, have acquired defenseman Mathieu Roy from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for the rights to forward Matt Rust.

Roy, 26, has four assists in 14 AHL games with Syracuse this season, along with 10 assists in 31 NHL games with Columbus. The native of St.-Georges, Que., has played 255 career AHL games with Syracuse, Springfield, Hamilton, and Edmonton/Toronto since being drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in 2003.

Roy has registered two goals and 11 assists in 61 career NHL games with Columbus and Edmonton.

Rust, 20, has collected 11 goals and 21 assists in 37 games at the University of Michigan this season. He was Florida’s fourth-round pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

The Bloomfield Hills, Mich., native spent two seasons with the United States Development Program from 2005-07, registering 26-35-61 and 123 penalty minutes in 107 games.
